Hello,

I’m starting to build a Pitts S-2A10 (Acrobatic Biplane) from the PILOT Series of OK Model Japan.
The Plane has the following size:

Length: 715mm
Wing Span: 840 mm
Wing Area: 22dm2
Weight: 950 – 1000gram

The model is originally intended for a .10 to .15er Glow Engine.

However I want to power the plane with a brushless outrunner. Based on my calculations a .15 engine produces around 0.4 BHP and therefore around 300 Watt Power (correct??).

Which brushless outrunner would you guys recommend in order to also get some decent acrobatic performance out of the plane?

Thanks !!

Hello,

I maybe a little bias..well actuallycompletely bias, but we have just recieved out Dualsky Pr.25 motors. They are outrunners that are designed to replace a .25 size motor..but for your application it would work just great! It is similar in specs and price to an Axi 2820/10, BUT you get all the mounting hardware and prop extender at no extra charge. I have received my samples and put a PR.40 on a Modeltech Magic and am very happy with it. I think the .25 wiould be perfect for your plane...
here are the specs.

Let me know if you are interested, I can make you a deal!

Get an AXI or a look alike outrunner and have fun. Call HL, they can hook you up with the right AXI for the job and offer you all the trimmings if you wish.

For conversions of this size I use Mega 15/15/4 with a Corbi gearbox of 2.62:1 with 3s.

I can turn a 11x8 prop at 21 amps and fly a Fokker Triplane
or I can turn a 10x10 prop at 21 amps to fly a GeeBee.

Outriggers are not the only way to go.

I believe that is "outrunner". ;)

An "outrigger" is some kind of weird polynesean boat made out of palm trees and bamboo. :D

Anyway, gears are just too noisy, not to mention fragile. :censored:

Funny how I wrote outrigger but my brain read it as outrunner.

I can tune the system better between prop, gearing, motor and batteries to get a setup the fits better for the plane. Once that plane has the great meeting with the ground I can reconfigure everything for another plane with just pinon changes outs.

Fragile I will disagree with that, I have smashed a plane into the ground that had a gearbox on it no damage, you just have to buy good gearboxes. I use Corbi gearboxes for my size .25 conversions and they are way beefy and strong.

Now one advantage to a inrunner with a gearbox is without the rotating case of the outrunner I have an easier time mounting batteries in the nose of my plane. When I use an outrunner I always have to worry about anything rubbing on that rotating case.

Now I will say I do like outriggers, for some planes they work great. Heck I am even going to use an outrigger in a gearbox to get the performance I want. I have a outrigger from a heli I had so have to reuse it and a gearbox makes that possible.

This is all a different way to skin the same cat.

God bless, good luck. There are many ways, indeed.

Whatever floats your outrigger. :D

What about an Astro 19 DD- swings the right size prop- should handle 250 watts with no problem.

Mulitplex 480 3 or 4 G would really move this thing out. I have on in my 3lb, 25 size ME 109 and it is very impressive.
