Just getting back into RC ofter a 20 year lapse and WHAM ........ I think I went "Back To The Future". The technology is very cool. Well, I built a Sig Mustang 450 25 years ago that needs to be glassed and painted. It is basically a sport pylon racer with a 50 inch wing span, foam core/sheeted wings, and fixed gear, .45 engine requirement. What do you recommend for an electric conversion?
Thanks,

Rocketman, Welcome to "The Ezone"! :D
I can't recall ever having seen this plane, it would be nice to have a picture of one. Having a 50" wing mounted to a sleek fuse and sporting a 1.65 HP (OS.46AX) powersource I'd have to say WOW is how I'd imagine it would fly.
Just as a example the 1.65 HP = ~1230 watts (1 HP = ~746 watts). Cram in as many watts as will fit and you can afford., I'd recommend around 800 watts but if you and the plane can manage more by all means go for it.
Don't let the lower wattage figure with an electric powerplant make you think any less of it. You see the beauty of going electric is that the glow engine is stuck with a range of prop sizes. Quite often the prop sizes aren't optimally matched to the airframe and are too small in diameter.
One motor that I like is the Mega 22/30/3. The EDF guys are running it all day long at 800 watts and they do well. Here are a few inputs from Motocalc.
Mega 22/30/3
CC P60 ESC
TP 2100 6S2P lipo
MEC Gearbox 2.72:1
12 X 11 APC
41 amps, 800+ watts input, 82 oz. thrust, 92 mph pitch speed
It should do well at these figures. More power would make it even more fun if you were to ask me. :D

Get an AXI or a look alike outrunner and have fun. Call HL, they can hook you up with the right AXI for the job and offer you all the trimmings if you wish.

Thanks guys for the help. Electric is coming of age and it has given me renewed interest in Rcs. Lookinf forward to the conversion project. If you know of anyone with an old Mustang 450 kit let me know. Could use replacement cheek cowls.
