View Full Version : How about 3 blades on High power systems ?

Hi all,
did you know that Aeronaut sells some yokes for 3 blades ?
The smallest seems to be the 42mm. They are zero degree, there are no twisted ones.

Has anyone tried that on Hotliners / F5B or even Pylon planes and what's the result ?
I'd assume it should be less efficient than a slightly large 2 blades system.

Even if it's not as efficient, I'd like to see people's faces if someone was to come with a 16*16 3-blades plane :D
And what about pylon with three 5*5 blades or so (this particular hub is probably too big though) ?

Alternatively, especially on large gliders, has anyone ever tried to run a single blade (balanced by a weight) as in for some hand-launched planes ? If lesser blades are better efficiency then this should work also, it does with rubber power at least...

I have used a 3 blade prop long time ago, it worked... Should be less efficiënt as you say. Only reason would be if you cannot fit a bigger diameter, the 3 blade might absorb more power (hopefully useful power)

Theo Gordijn from Holland experimented a lot with single blade props for electric gliders. Unfortunately he is no more.

Denis Kuhn used to use single bladed props for pylon racing. He flew 10% faster than the rest in those days, but probably not because of this. When asked about the reason why, he said (jokingly) that there was 50% less chance of breaking one when landing....

I've wanted to try one for a while but can't find a spinner for a three bladed yoke.

The best reason I can see for using one on a hotliner type plane is because you are really short and need the extra ground clearance for safe launching. ;)

I saw one on a UK mag, something like that but further capable of varying pitches, want one for an old fashioned f3a, I thought its cool to have -ve pitches to brake right after touch down like reverse thurst on jet engines in full size airliners.
Anyone know where to get such thing? Someone told me to try Aircraft world of Japan, buy tried email and no replies.

check out http://www.alisport.com/ and you'll see the Silent series of sailplanes. They use an up-and-go system with a single bladed prop. WEIRDest thing I've seen. I saw one of these a recent full size sailplane show. Really cool to see the scale stuff up close and personal.

Yeah, but what does that have to do with the three bladed spinner? :P

I'll be a tower brand or aeronaut brand spinner could be modified (notched) for a 3 armed yolk very easily. Yet another reason to save that one good rfm blade that always manages to survive the unspeakable. :)
