Hello and Anyon Ha Say yo,

I recently moved to Seoul from Canada to be an English teacher.

I love it here! Seoul is a great city.

I want to buy an RC car but do not know where any hobby shops are. I found one RC shop near Sungshin Women's University, on Subway line 4, but it did not have many RC cars.

Where are some other RC stores? I live in Nowon but can get anywhere in Seoul on the subway.

Thanks very much!
Kam Sa Ha Mi Da!

purple car,

Hi James, I am sure RC store owners or other RC car fans in Seoul, who are watching this site, will soon appear to give you necessary advice.

If a car you are interested is not a toy but expensive kind, you might as well order it on line from US. Try Tower Hobby, www.towerhobby.com. Such a car sold in Korea is imported anyway.

Thanks for visiting our Korean Club.

That reminds me to open new sub forum for RC car fans.

Thanks Jnamgun and John. I found a few online sites which I will have a Korean friend translate for me.

I am looking for a good quality brand such as Associated, Traxxas, or many others.

The other day I was walking through the big park on Yoeuido island and there were about 10 guys with nice RC cars having races. They were having fun and attracting a big crowd. I was shy to talk to them because I havn't taken enough Korean lessons yet!

Thanks again.

purple car,

Ya, why don't you find out from car fans you meet at the race track?
You can talk to them in English. They should be able to answer a simple question.

I think I'll do that next time I'm there.

On the weekend I used my meager Korean to locate psyhobby. You get to it from the Yangjae station on the orange line. It turned out to be an RC car mecca, with at least four other RC stores in very close proximity. A person would never know they were there unless they walked back from the main street onto these quiet residential streets.

Unfortunately, they were all closed because I got there too late on a saturday! However I'll go back again during the week.

There`s many people who enjoy RC car in Seoul.
I used to run a RC car before, now I have nothing because I sold out all of mine. Especially, I like Monster truck ,for example, Savage, Revo etc.
I`m flying RC planes now and concentrate on it.

Your Korean friend likes RC car too?
James, I think your Korean is fine, so you don`t worry about that.

If you drive south on the main road from Seoul station, there are two on the right hand side before you get to the river.

One is located at the big junction where the War Museum is off to the left, the other is a bit further on towards the river.

I think I even have the GPS coordinates in my Magellan !

Thanks ChrisP, that's good to know. I'll try to check those out soon.

The website www.korearc.com has an excellent list of all the hobby shops in Seoul, and in all of Korea. I actually found out that there was a small hobby shop near my home in Nowon, and a few others close by.

But the coolest RC seller I've found so far: at the Dongdaumaun stadium market. Inside Dongdaemaun stadium, where they sell all the used and antique items, there is one small stall with a lot of RC cars for sale. Most of them are gas. They are all in rough condition but might be cheap.

I've gone back to the stadium three times so far and each time the owner of the stall has been gone!

Thanks Runsthroughit, I'd type a few things in Korean if my keyboard had Korean letters!

Hi purple car,

I believe you are talking about Choong-Ang market, it’s about 1 mile away from Dongdeaumoon stadium (Chung-gye-chun 8th street).
I left Seoul 15 years ago, so I do not know changes there but when I was in high school almost every week I was there for find some thing.
Not for the RC stuff but electronic parts.
But I remember one of my friends bought some RC parts from the stores there.
If it is not the same place then it may be worth to check.

I visited Dongdaemun stadium twice in September and didn't see anything like a stall with modelling stuff.
It's a cool place though !

The first time I walked there from Namdaemun  , the second time I took the train from Seoul Station. You would not believe how proud I was that I actually worked out how to buy a ticket and where to get off. :)

I found another good RC store. I think it is called "Academy Hobby". To get to it, take line number 4 to Hansung University station and take exit 6. The shop is 10 steps from exit 6.

They have a small selection of RC buggies, touring cars and trucks. They have a large selection of model cars. They also do work on RC cars, and sell many spare parts.

They speak a bit of English and are very helpful and friendly.

hey guys, thanks to those who put directions on for finding rc stuff in seoul, i found a place called rc life quite a ways away from yangjiea station , but do you agree that the prices are way way to high??? most kits i could get from canada are at least 100-200 $$ less.

RC prices in Korea are high because most are imported. High end from Europe, lots from Japan and low end from China. You can definitely get better deal getting them from the US or Canada if you do not have to pay import duties when you receive them through the mail. Once, I had to pay about 20% of the order for import duties when I ordered some servos and speed controllers from Japan.

One thing Koreans make themselves, though increasingly designed in Korea but actually produced in China, is LiPo batteries. I found the latest generation LiPos in Korea but still had to pay top dollar (rather won) for them being at the leading edge.
