Flat Pattern

I want to make up sides and a bottom for a boat using 1/32 plywood. It is flexible enough such that it can be twisted and glued into place. Before going too far, I however want to make up a flat pattern.

Does anyone know of a source or system to make up a twisted flat pattern for three view drawings? I am looking for a graphical approach to this, much as would come out of a high school drafting book for bending sheet metal.

I also do not want to cut up numerous pieces of paper to begin with.

The only thing I can advise is that the section should be either conical or cylindrical and that the latter tends to give rise to a better handling boat. The Guru of British modellers, Vic Smeed, once did an article outlining the maths, which was beyond me;)

Hi Wm,

Do you have access to a 3D CAD modelling package? If so, I will attempt to walk through the steps I use... (It ain't pretty)

Raymond....

I have R-14 loaded up, but would rather go about it graphically, like in the 1960's.

The hull from about 1/2 way to transome is straight lined. Forward of that is the standard big curves, lessening and lessening to become the bow.

Plywood is rather hard to sand to shape, and thus I want to jig-saw it out of a big sheet before attempting to install. Actually, I want to jig saw out numerous parts from the plywood sheet all at one time. Thus I cannot build the framework of the hull, and then make a paper plan.

Have to do all the cutting at one time.

Try http://boatdesign.net/articles/developable-surfaces/ It might br what you're looking for.

Martin.....

It is described in a format to which I am unacustiomed to. I see what is being mentioned better now.

I am going to give it a try.
