This coming from a proud TT AND Kyosho owner. . .
Even with all the craze of 1/5 TT's and NF's I still think 1/8 Kyoshos are the way to go in terms of racing. They're cheaper first of all. Also, with 1/5 it takes a while to organize a big space and put up a decent track. Big spaces mean limited visibility and the farther away you get, the more you can't guage depth and also you don't know if you're leaning too much in the curves.
But 1/8's can run circles around everybody.
Heck, just yesterday I was driving the little man through a car track with not that much difficulty (Make sure you plan ahead on your turns).
Essentials for racing:
Need a qualifier to determine starting positions in Mains. Track lap times w/ transponders. But how do you fit a transponder into a little 1/8?
Need track marshalls. Many.
Need a way to start off the bikes fairly. No problem!! The kit stand can do it!
Just a thought. . .

I agree with you whole heartedly about the 1:8 bikes needing less room!!!
I love mine and racing is great!!!!!!!
The 1:5 bikes do take more room....but the action is "different" Not better nor worse but just different!!!
Its exciting in a "big" style way compared to the kyoshos
I love them both!
I can't wait until RCMA has a race again with our 1:8 bikes and the 1:5 sized bikes!!! San Jose Next getting together is a week from tomorrow!!! SUNDAY

Hello everybody,
Heres a pic of my Doohan HOR next to my emaxx. I just got it in june and it is my first RC bike. I drove it stock for most of the summer and am now in the process of testing upgrades. Ive surfed the yahoo forum, and have gotten alot of helpful info, as well as enjoyed the pics and vids. I cant wait to get my bike fixed up and hope to be able to get some more info here.
For anyone interested in the performance of a stock HOR here is a short video clip.
Click here for Stock HOR VID... for best results right-click and save as (http://www.rcpics.net/media/bowdy_bike_run.mpg)

Pretty darn cool video! I have saw that same video somewhere..but I forgot where...it gives a good Idea how the stock one runs...
The video was a little "jumpy" but I may be my computer.
Great job!

Looks like you have a very solid bike there!!! Your driving skills are way better than mine during my first YEAR with my Kyosho. But what was hindering me were the little things with my bike that didn't let me drive it like it was supposed to.
Which leads me to my next point. To get good handling with the bikes, I suggest you get the steering shock to eliminate head shake, bearing steering block for super smooth rotation, shims all around, and front oil forks and a rear oil shock for a smoother more resistant suspension. Also, just like R/C cars tires can make a huge difference. I run high grip rear w/foam insert and stock front w/light flywheel and molded silicone insert. With that silicone front insert you might not need the steering shock.
For high speed running w/better motors, get ball bearings, alum. gearbox w/oval washers & metal gears & pinions, and a higher capacity 7.2V battery pack.

Kev, will be there with the RCMA on Sunday.
Just talked to Ray "Turbo" and he said we're going to meet at Dave's house in Foster City (right across the San Mateo Bridge) to watch F-1 racing Indianapolis 500 on TV while we work our bikes, then migrate over to the racing "hotspot" 2 blocks away from his house. It's kind of secluded, so we won't run into stray cars or gopeds!

Ian,,
RCMA (maybe soon to be RCMCC) will not meet at Dave's house....his wife had a very unfortunate death of a close friend...so it may be a little much having a number of people over "his" house.....but we probably will meet across from GREAT AMERICA
Similar where they race the 1/5 scale cars "on sat".....
We probably will meet there this sunday...call me or I will email you or post for sure....
we are 90% sure we will meet there sunday thanks!!

Kevin, are we meeting this weekend? We can try running the bikes in Union City, where I live. I run them on the cement in a brand new elementary school. The space is huge and the cement is super flat.
If we do meet anyway, I suggest we have a HOR spec class with the kit motors. I have an extra one in case somebody is missing one. This way we can get good racing shots.
I also finished rebuilding my TT. Only running a stock motor though. Brushless is just too out of control for my taste.

1:26 Scale Hanging on Rider. Has a little NiMH battery in it that lasts about 7-10 minutes on a 2 min. charge (built into transmitter). Too bad there's only 2 channels for it.
Has detachable crashbars/training wheels. From the reviews, it's not as fast as a Mini-Z, but fairly fast for its scale.
They make a Honda Repsol version of this bike. . . That will be mine!! However, they're $50 out of the country. I emailed Nikko to ask who their American distributor will be.
Again, this is a HOR!

Hi 1/8 scale owners. I am trying to find a few performance parts for a Kyosho HOR... GPW3 metal pinion gears; GPW12 special steering parts; 70301 Grand Prix 28bb motor (or better); and aluminum gearbox w/oval washers. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
I think I have all the other recommended parts on oreder including: 1100 mah battery; gpw15 heat sink; gpw7 light flywheel; gpw11 special gear+sprocket set; gpw2 rear oil shock; high grip tires; ball bearing set; and gpw10 front oil forks. Did I miss anything?

Ian, thanks again. Everything has been ordered.
I think I'll be set now, as far as upgrades go at least. Any hints on set-up or driving? I ordered the Suzuki HOR (and all the parts), but haven't received anything yet. I think I'll still need a transmitter though. I ordered a futaba radio set (#mcr-2m)for the hor (rec, esc and servo). Do you have a suggestion for a transmitter?
Dave (Chainlube By Dave)
Kev71H
Aug 18, 2004, 01:33 PM
I have a suggestion on Transmitters
NUMBER ONE> NO AM radio (FM ONLY) FM has better transmission
Get a radio that has all the adjustments:
This means Endp Point adjustments on both throddle and steering.
Unlike RC Cars these bikes will need the steering toned down (more and likely) so its much more responsive to your "driving style". To put a bike together and using a el-cheapo AM transmitter that has no adjustments means your stuck with what the factory has as "general" settings. Not good.
so..
FM
And able to adjust both channels.
This WILL help (only if your considering a bottom of the line transmitter)
Most transmitters have these adjustments but some cheapo "factory" transmitter don't have "both" adjustments.

Dave,
With the speedo sorry I can't help you because I'm not familiar with all of the compatible transmitters. The guys in our club use the AM Futaba magnum though with that speedo.
Some hints and tips:
- Good thing is that the steering setup is pretty much done once you finish building the kit (i.e. no steering springs or silicone tubing to tune), but after first drive you’ll notice the response is slow. In order to lean it you’ll need to let go of the throttle or brake and hold the wheel in that direction throughout the whole turn.
- To get out of the lean, slowly return the wheel to neutral and give it more gas. This should straighten it out.
- If you try to get out of the lean by simply turning the wheel full lock to the opposite side chances are it will not work. This is because the lower fairing scrapes on the sides, holding it back. Run with the lower fairing off for a while to practice. The problem still remains (now the battery edges will scrape), but it is better. The only true way to fix this problem is to lengthen the crash bars so that none of the body is scraping. For example see Dave's pic http://dave.rcpics.net/deltarc7-11-04bikes/hor8.jpg
Also try to get a ground eyes view of the bike while driving it. The rider is alive!!

I've used testors and Tamiya paint and like Tamiya the best out of the two. With the same amount of coats (3) the Tamiya paint is much thicker and smoother. Also the built-in gloss is quite nice =)

Hi again 1/8th racers, Kevin and Ian. I'm still waiting for my HOR Suzuki (maybe today). I haven't seen a Pepsi Suzuki paint scheme yet, and thought that might be the way to go for me. Ian, you've got me pegged! I'm a big Eddie Lawson fan. I've been following motogp since '83 (I hope I didn't just give away my age). I learned how to ride in '81, then won my first race at Willow Springs in '91.
Yea, this seems to be the start of a collection of rc bikes. Old school is a must. Any idea where I can get a few sets of the old Kyosho bodywork? Will it fit the hor?
Dave (Chainlube By Dave)

Aug 20, 2004, 12:38 PM
Cool - I'm a Schwantz fan, but only when he doesn't crash out. Then it's Rainey all the way. (It's no coincidence that their careers made up the "golden age" of racing '88-'93)
Following motogp since '83 huh? Wow you must be 21 years old or something :D ;) .
For old school body work you'll be pressed to find something on ebay - that's about it. I've been searching "kyosho bike" for a year now and have found only a handful of bodies sold. You're better off buying a used Mk1 and just taking the body off that. Oh and fairings fit the HOR no problem. Tanks don't.

For a person who wants an "RTR" fully built fully painted & detailed bike it's a decent deal but I've found those bikes sell for $50 or less when the starting price is $1. Definitely not worth it if you're going to be repainting the thing.
But still one of the coolest paintjobs though. That Rothmans-Honda partnership from the 80's-early 90's is the most famous in motorcycle racing.
Ian

Aug 20, 2004, 01:38 PM
Ian, I think Irv Kenamoto had a lot to do with that (Rothman-Honda's success). When Rothmans announced that they were leaving motogp to go F-1 racing, it signaled the end of an era. I miss those golden years.
To keep this on-topic, I found your hor hop-up guide ver3 word doc., and will be following the advice. I do have one question though. Do you make the silicone inserts, or can you buy them? I need inserts for my 1/5 tt too.

Aug 20, 2004, 02:00 PM
Erv Kanemoto was the man!! Responsible for taming Freddie's NSR500 back in the day and also developing the "big bang" Honda of 1992. Truly a motogp legend. OK, back on topic.
Sadly no one makes the inserts anymore that I know of. I got my originals from the old yahoo forum (someone made a batch of them) but they're all on my running bikes at the moment.
Read more about it here
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/radiocontrolmotorcycles/message/459
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/radiocontrolmotorcycles/message/1473
The Kyosho guys from Florida have found a good substitute for the inserts, maybe they can chime in? I think they got some door sealer foam from Home Depot and stuffed it into the front tires to make them hard. Use the same kind of foam on the Kyosho rear but don't pack it in as much. We've found that since the rear is doing most of the braking and acceling work it needs more "give" in the tire.
As for the TT get some larger diameter foam from Home Depot. I couldn't find any circular cross sections so I bought square cross section strips and trimmed the edges to fit. They work as well as the ones you get from GRP as long as you trim them right.

At first I didn't use the heat sink for my 280BB and below motors, because for the added weight the heat sink isn't too much of a benefit. But with the hotter brushless motors out now, use it. It fits easliy over the 180sized can.

Well considering that I've been riding since I was 8 and I currently own a worked CB1, VFR and R1 and I'm a retired Highway Patrol Motorcycle Cop, I'm not really worried... hehehehe....
If I was going to get the bike, I was going to do all the hop-ups when I build it... It's not like I'm the one who's going to loop it personally...

O.K. ...how about an aluminum gearbox; Heatsink; Topcad brake discs; Receiver/servo set; Steering damper; Oval washers for gearbox;
Check page 2 of this thread for some info on where to get some of the parts. Also check e-bay...search "rc motorcycle"
also... http://stores.ebay.com/rl0725-store_1-8-Motorcycle-Parts_W0QQssPageNameZVIStoreHeaderLinksQQtZkm
and...http://shop.the-border.nl/customer/search.php?substring=topcad&in_category=
for the brake discs.
I also found some GPM aluminum rims on e-bay here..http://stores.ebay.com/rl0725-store_1-8-Motorcycle-Parts_W0QQssPageNameZVIStoreHeaderLinksQQtZkm
The rims weren't listed, but an e-mail to him proved successful.
Tower Hobbies has some stuff now too...http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0005p?&I=KYOC0107&P=Z
I'm sure you have already found many of these sites, but I try to be thorough.

You guys running the Mamba's, I'm stumped... I don't know if I should get the 6800 or 8000 motor...
Chainlube, I don't think they'd work in Colorado....

I'm blown away by the speed of the 6800, so I would recommend that. However "C of G" put the 8000 in his bike, not sure what came out of that.
Dave I have some of those cards in the garage. Let me dust off monopoly. . .

I can't wait to get a Mamba 6800 and I don't even have a 1/8 yet!!!!!!!
The 8000 is too much for the lithiums I plan to use. Just too much amp pull. I think the 6800 is a great choice being how "you can get too much of a good thing"
You may just end up tearing up your bike if you can't control it because of too much power.
Just my thoughts,

My concern with the 8000 is low speed torque and how quickly it's going to go through batteries...
I have the bike ordered should hopefully have it by the end of next week... Burnout 3 is coming out wednesday so I'm going to be pretty busy in front of the boob tube...

Whoever was looking for an aluminum swingarm for the HOR dinball has them in stock again. They must be pulling them out a discontinued hat or something.

Well, my bike and hop-ups are on their way... Need to get a motor/controller and servo... Does the bike take micro or regular servo's???
grymg
Sep 04, 2004, 06:32 PM
Definitely micro. Currently I run Hitec HS-81 servo w/ plastic gears (don't get metal gears because they strip the servo horn), Mamba ESC, Mamba motor, and Novak XXL FM receiver in the tail section. Velcro it in so you can easily take it out to do crystal swaps. Also loop the antenna wire through the seat into the rider's body.

Wish I had that info a few minutes ago when I ordered another Futaba radio set for my spare bike. Yes Ian, I decided to use all of those spare parts and just build a spare bike.

Ok, a running report on the Mamba 8000, its freaking FAST.
There is no problem with power anywhere at any time. From half throttle just pull a little more and wheelies are so easy, even easier when theres grip or it just slides. Since the overall weight has been reduced the bike handles better too. I'm using a 2 cell Apogee 7.4V 830mah pack and the run time so far is estimated at 20 min. Temps are low for both ESC and motor/batt. no worries and its geared at 13T with an HPI metal pinion and metal gear hop up from Kyosho. The suspension must be set way soft in order to handle some of the power, theres too much for this bike to handle anyway.
Its not fr the faint of heart and the crashes are not a pretty sight, Ive had two that I thought would write off the bike but its fine! Because theres less inertia in the motor the gears dont strip from a minor crash like they tend to do with a brushed motor sometimes and I run the mesh on the loose side to help the gears, very minor play.
If you want something that commands respect I think you need the 8000KV motor!! Look at it this way, its more like GP1 now! BTW do the math at 8000KV X 7.4V = 59200rpm! So imagine 11.1V! 88800rpm and a whole lot of torque with the new progammable throttle curve from CC. I dont think the motor will stand up to that rpm but you will see most of it!

Help... What shock oil in the rear shock??? Hahaha...
I'm spraying all the plastic parts that are supposed to be metal with Eastwood Alumina Blast paint... Looks like freshly cast aluminum...

Sep 06, 2004, 06:18 PM
what shock? spring? how heavy is the bike and what tires are you running? It takes a bunch of tuning to get the right combo that works great for a surface and then it wont work somewhere else. Try everything! Soft spring thinner oil harder spring thicker oil and that doesnt even consider the piston hole #. Try everything! See what works for you and dont give up. Start with 45wt and see what happens.
vtl1180ny
Sep 06, 2004, 07:10 PM
I trtied 40 weight associated and the shoch was way too stiff... It's the stock Kyosho spring that comes with the oil shock...
Chris Nicastro
Sep 07, 2004, 01:33 AM
IMHO, the Kyosho shock isnt good. I have tried it and now I use a Tamiya TRF shock with a threaded body. I use a Tamiya flourescent red spring with it but now that the bike is lighter I have to go with a softer spring.

Sep 07, 2004, 11:32 AM
Same opinion here. As far as I remember inside the Kyosho shock there are no holes in the piston. The fluid moves along the sides of the cylinder, which is a lot of surface area. I would go maybe with diff oil in the 1000's wt. to get enough damping from this "nail-type" piston.
Currently I use an upside down HPI touring super shock w/#5 piston. With the holes you can go back to ordinary shock oils.

Oh and Chris, nice bike! I saved every one as usual. I miss seeing that familiar "Castrol" paint scheme you have.
I also see you have taken away your "push and pull" direct steering on the triples. Or probably because this is a new bike.

Hey Ian,
Yeah I went back to conventional since this is a new chassis. For now anyway. Thanks, I'm glad you like the scheme, its easy to do and no paint so fixing it is no prob, I have an awesome Rainey Marlboro body set I converted to Yamaha from a Honda/Suzuki but I wont run it.
vtl1180ny,
Ca'mon man! Get the 8K! ok, whatever, its your bike, do what you want, I warned you, the other guys will be talking about it around the water cooler at work saying "theres that guy that should have bought the 8K Mamba Motor but got the slower one instead........couldnt handle i.........not brass b.....pus....."
I hope your happy, I wont say anything, I tried ....
