I've always wondered this. And just how effective is the streamlining commonly found on pattern models?

I think it would be hard to actually fit an engine and a real pilot in a full-size plane shaped lika a modern pattern plane.

Modern pattern planes are not that "streamlined" really. They are shaped to fly slowly and neutrally, which means that the fuselage is made to create quite a bit of drag and the side area is carefully calculated and tested for neutral behavior.
