I traveled over to Alamogordo from Las Cruces (approximately 1 hour drive) to check out the Southern New Mexico Aerobatic Shootout on Sunday, September 25th. I wanted to see what an IMAC competition was all about and support two of our local club members.

The layout of the VMP site was fantastic, mountain backdrops and great deal of wide open space. The facility the VMP flyers have put together is very user friendly and one of the best club fields I have ever been to. One aspect that really caught my attention was the hospitality. Comments came from all the competitors regarding the great hospitality and the overall direction of the event.

The competition consisted of rounds of International Miniature Aerobatic Club format on Saturday and Sunday followed by a voluntary freestyle competition Sunday afternoon. The judges were very helpful and accessible to the competitors and spectators. Competition aerobatics is a sector of this hobby I am just beginning to explore and based on my experience at the shootout, I intend to start competing as well. It is my understanding that to get started flying in basic competition, any monoplane or biplane aircraft can be used. Competition in other classes requires meeting IMAC aircraft standards which can be viewed at the IMAC website, rules and sequences can also be downloaded there.

Three of the pilots participated in the freestyle competition Mike Morgan, Ralph Lang and Dave Anderson. Dave Anderson of Albuquerque won the freestyle competition based on spectator appreciation. Below is some video from the freestyle competition.

I managed to take photos of most of the aircraft at this event. The trophies the VMP flyers presented to the winners were outstanding and consisted of engraved glass with a personalized picture of the competitor and his plane. If this event comes around next year, I highly recommend you make plans to attend.
