I'm converting this plane and have a question regarding thrustline. I'd like to open the bottom of the firewal for battery access, but in doing so, my mount for my motor will be about 1/8 to 1/4 inch higher than the glow mount. Can I get some feedback on how this may affect flight? Thanks!

I don't think an 1/8" would hurt anything at all...
I'm sure my conversion mounts are off a little seeing how I just kinda eyeball it ,,, they fly just fine .
take care and good luck .

Thanks SF. By the way, love your H9 P-40 conversion. I saw the 40 sized new P-40 on giant scale planes and it has me interested in doing a conversion on it.

Joe,
I did one:

...and the end result was :(
The CG on that plane needs to be calculated properly, from what is posted on the Instructions. I have nothing against the GSP P-40. I just think the CG has to be placed in the right place for this thing to fly right. I emailed GSP, and never got an answer back about this.

Sam - thanks. I definately won't do a conversion on something that others don't have a good feeling for.
Got one for you guys. Check out this P-51: http://www.atecmodels.com/index.php/product_info.php?12351
That would be sweeeeeet - an all molded P-51 for under $500.
Other conversions I'd like to see but don't have much feedback on:
VMAR Beaver - the 72 inch one.
H9 - P-47 - I'm sure it will be done real soon
Couple of others, too.

Looks nice, I've seen both 47's on the Horizon hobby web page, and they look very nice. I think KMP also makes some of there planes molded too.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of the KMP models, speedersonline is selling them also. I like their Seafury, but I worry about the wing loading. With that '51 link I gave, it is entirely molded, wings too. I'd like to see one in person though, before I lay out that much cash. Once I'm done with the Ultra, I have an OV-10 ARF that I'm converting. I'm going to run two Astro 19's - probably going to end up at 6 lbs.

would like to see pics on the OV-10. Are you going to start a thread?

I actually mentioned something in wattflyer under conversions. Here is the website: www.hobbyhangar.com - go to scaletech arfs - they have a huge 81 inch span Bronco ARF also.

Probably won't start the thread til I get my Ultra finished and flown too. I'm trying to make it an oversized parkflyer - carbon landing gear and pushrods, mini servos (mg), taking out the servo tray, and using a kontronic 480 2800 w/5.2 gearing. I hope to get around 700 watts on a 14x7 prop on 5s.

Well, I'm waiting for the carbon fibre rods for my servo mounts and pushrods but otherwise she's mostly done. I weighed everything together, including the battery pack, and she only comes to 80 oz. I'll weigh again when she's all together, but unless I use too much epoxy to mount my tailwheel, I'll be around 5 lbs. Not too shabby for a plane as large as this, plus I haven't even removed the ply servo mount. I figure that with this low weight, I may have problems with the cg, so my esprit motor mount is about an inch longer than necessary. I'm also expecting around 700 watts I should have unlimited vertical. Hopefully I'll maiden soon, but fall brings yardwork, so I may be busy these next few weekends.

Finally finished this after fidding around with my other planes. I wanted to lose as much weight as possible so I used standard servos for the elevator and rudder and hitec 85's for the ailerons and flaps. I bought carbon landing gear, lighter wheels and used carbon pushrods. Get this, AUW is only 4 lbs 10 oz!!!! This is with a 4s 3250 tanic pack. Instead of the 5.2 gb, I'm using the 4.3. Watts on the meter reads about 550 watts with a 15x8 apc prop.
