Howdy y'all,
After running the Mayhem ST a bit more I'm now ready to give my comparison
on the two, based on pros and cons for those who are interested.
Savage Pros
1. Practically indestructible.
2. Will drive in, over and through pretty much anything.
3. Wheelies on command, lots of low-end torque.
4. Jumps very well and lands huge jumps with ease.
5. Optional reverse/3-speed.
Savage Cons
1. Very difficult to work on/clean/repair.
2. NOT RTR out of the box. Requires HT steering servo and throttle mod to
get the steering and brakes up to par. Requires high perf. air filter, AM
cooling head and AM pipe as well.
3. LOUD.
4. Limited top speed.
5. Handles like a battleship.
Mayhem ST Pros
1. True RTR out of the box. Includes tuned pipe, adequate MG steering
servo, high-perf. 2-stage air filter.
2. Very, very, very fast. .26, 7-port 2.75HP 38,000 RPM Sportwerks motor.
Looks like a Mach 26 with different carb.
3. Handles like a European sports car in dirt, grass, gravel, concrete and
any other surface you can find.
4. Holds a tune very well.
5. Very easy to service, clean, repair, etc.
Mayhem ST Cons
1. Doesn't jump well. Inadequate suspension for huge airs.
2. Not as durable as the Savage.
3. VERY thirsty and small gas tank (120cc). I average around 7-9 minutes
runtime per tank with 9.5mm carb insert.
4. Limited ground clearance limits the type of terrain it will tackle.
5. Factory doesn't tighten/loctite all screws properly and must be given a
once over and loctited before initial use.
All in all, these are two completely different vehicles designed for
different purposes. The Mayhem is hands down more fun to drive because it
is faster, has a very linear throttle response, handles incredibly and isn't
so goshdarn loud. I was "pleasure driving" yesterday, just crusing around
the track at 1/3-1/2 throttle and loving the power and speed this thing has
even at 1/2 throttle in a relaxed environment.
The Mayhem holds a tune much, much better than the Savage and starts and
idles more reliably as well. It runs nice and cool with the stock head
(250*-270*), unlike the Savage which runs hot with the stock head if you've
tuned it for max performance (290*-300*). It has faster takeoff and top
speeds, which is amazing since it has a single-speed, center diff instead of
a transmission.
So far I've run 4 gallons thru the Sav and 1 gallon thru the Mayhem. We'll
see how it holds up with age. I've already had a couple pretty decent
wipeouts with the Mayhem and it's driven away unscathed.
