Hey everyone, it's Billy Hell back in the field.
I'm at the Dayton, Ohio Giant Scale event. Brother Bob Sadler called and told me I should come down. That's a good enough reason for me.
I left this morning from Nashville, TN and hit the field around 5pm. I shook a lot of hands and took photos. After I upload these I'll head back out to the field.
Saturday is the big day and I should have a lot more photos and some detailed information on the planes.

Picture 2 - Here we have everybody's favorite pilot Greg Popel. You might have seen Greg judge at the ETOC last year.
Picture 3 - The Futuba boys were sitting around coming up with new switches to put on future radios.

Hey guys, we just got back to the field. It's late but man was it a full day. There were jets, scale warbirds, 3D planes...just about everything. I got a tour of the museum tonight as well as being treated to an IMAX movie called Red Flag. It was a long, great day.

I had a great time. Bill Cline, Bob Sadler, Frank Noll and everyone that helped put he D.O.G.S show together did a great job and had a good time doing it. The weather on Saturday was perfect and the museum tour and IMAX show topped off the day. Thanks to everyone that made it a great show.
I got some great interviews for the Hell Cast. This is a pod cast (you can listen to it on your computer) that feautures stories from the people in RC. I'll have that audio edited and up by mid-week. You can check that out at:

You've got to spend some dough to get recruits. It's just bait, you know.

Oh, and by the way, recruiting is hard enough without people bagging on the recruiter and the tools they're given to get the job done. My mom always said "If you don't have some thing nice to say..."

Hey Billy,
Great coverage. I went yesterday (Sunday) and must say that I was a bit disappointed compared to the past several years. Crowd and participant count seems much lower. What was the feedback...gas prices kept many long distance guys home?? I didn't see Bob Sadler (last years moderator) there on Sunday. I remember reading on some other websites that there was some dissidence between the warbird guys and the stunt guys (mostly warbird guys feeling that this drew a different crowd and that there was to much of the stunt stuff ). I don’t how true all this really is. I love the show regardless and would love to see it grow. I would even pay to get in. What your take?

I think the gas prices had a lot to do with it. Also, I keep hearing something that's actually a fallout from Katrina. I've talked to a lot of people who feel they need to batten down the hatches and stay closer to home, family and hearth - similar to the feeling after 9-11.
Sadler was there on Sat, I didn't make it down on Sun.

This was my first year so I had nothing to compare it to. Between Katrina and the gas prices that shot up on Friday morning I was surprised to see as many people as I did and by Saturday afternnoon the place had a lot of people there. I heard guys talking in the pits about the balance between warbirds, jets and 3D planes. Everyone seemed to get along fine. I don't think the whole 3D issue gets people as hot as it did in the past. I was shooting pictures for 3D Flyer Friday and Saturday so I was on the flight line the whole time and every seemed to be having a great time. Saturday was perfect. The wind was gone for the first half of the day and the sky looked like something out of Aero Fly Pro Deluxe.
I dropped Sadler off at the field on Sunday, so I know he there at least in the morning. The best part of big shows like this are the people. When I started in the hobby I had no idea that would make close friends that I only see at events but that is exactly what happened. I think the show was great and all the D.O.G.S. made the whole thing a pleasure.

Oh wow!! That SUV was at Lowe's last year when the Air Force came down there ^^ We took a field trip down there and it was cool :D lol we then went to the mall for luch and it was there that I played DDR Extreme for the first time ^^
When he came he didn't let us play a PS2....there wasn't one at the time i guess.

I agree that it was a great weekend after all the negatives (weather before event, Gas, and all that has happened in the gulf) we had going. I have only missed one year of this great event. I will say back in the first few years of the event, it was a good equal balance between the twisters, war birds, and scale. Now you see more twister at the event but this is happing to other events to, it‘s not a DOGS thing. Normally you have someone that wants to hover over the runway and burn a tank of gas doing it. Everyone kept the patter going and no hovering. As always my hats of to the DOGS and another great show!!!!

As I suspected gas prices and all. It's also hard to think about having fun with so many suffering from Katrina.
I have no reason to believe that this show will grow because it is so fantastic. My personal disappointemnt was that I arrived just as the F-18 was landing....ARRGG!!!!!!! Thanks for the input guys. Congrates DOGS!

Well, those wasted $ show you the audience that the air force is trying to draw from. Seems a dishonest way to recruit - kind of like luring them in with candy!

Guys,
It has been three years since I made it to the DOGS show. I was in the area working this year so I managed to swing by. I must say I was at little suprized to see the low pilot turn out but the event went on and turned out to be a great time. Its true the warbird crowd and 3-d crowd mixed like oil and water a few years ago. That has changed. Everyone seemed to really mix well. Not very often you get to fly with that mixture of aircraft. Turbines/ WWI/ WWII/ F-I Racers/ Helis/ 3-D. There was a great mix of airplane types there just enjoying the event. I found it somewhat Ironic that during the warbird demo 3/4 of the pilots flying are competing in the Tuscon Aerobatic Shootout this fall!! Billy has done an awesome job covering this event. I'm sure that the 3-D flyer article will be even better. There where 2 aircraft at the event that really stood out to me. Peter Goldsmith's B-17 was really nice. Many times he would have that at about 2 inchs above the pavement. His landings were very scale. Second was by far the finest scale model I have seen. Lewis Patton's F-18 Hornet. This baby had everything going on. Articulating landing gear/ Cockpit detail/ And the sound of it in the air. It was just incredible. I not the one to enjoy borebirds but the stuff there was awesome. One of the best events was Sadler and Poppel's slow roll contest with Andrew Jeskys Yak. There was heated discussion over the judging but I think Sadler came out on top. At least if you ask him!! In fact it might be on BH's web blog. There is a ton of great stuff that Billy recorded. I had a great time and hope to make it back next year. Out

Good grief, people- the vehicle and the contents were donated to the USAF as publicity for the vehicle and equipment manufacturers. If you really want to learn to use some REAL horsepower with wings- the Air Force is the way to go.

The show was great but I was excited that I was able to interview some of the folks that were there. The first Hell Cast up is part one of an interview with Peter Goldsmith of team JR. Peter is a great guy, easy going and thanfully willing to answer some questions. The first Hell Cast gives you a peak into how Peter got into RC. Part two is a story I have been saving from the Nall but I'll save that for later:

Agreed, but Pennies compared to some of their spending. How 'bout the Pentagon's investigation of $500 toilet seats some years back. As for Katrina, I feel terrible for all those people, but I would have definitely left. There is some conventional wisdom. My dad had said that the only thing I can avoid is floods. All 3 of our homes, growing up, were at some of the highest spots in the areas. Can't aviod earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, bombs, etc, so you may as well aviod the one you can.

You've probably got a car and enough money to pay for somewhere to stay away from home. Would you have gone if it meant walking, with kids and elderly relatives and only the food and water you could carry? How far do you think you'd have got in 24 hours and where would that have left you when the hurricane hit?

I doubt you guys are seeing the same one. There are 150 of those trucks around the country :) and they do work as recruiting tools.

When I was at Joe Nall I was standing on the front line when a great story unfolded. The story was so good I never really told it to anyone. While at the D.O.G.S. show I took advantage of Peter and Bob and got the story for the HELLcast. One of the reasons I never told it was because I wasn't sure if Peter would want me telling it. He was very cool about it and said he would be happy to talk about it. Another reason I didn't tell was because I knew I wouldn't get it right. So what we have here are all the parties involved. So what is the story about? Two P51 Mustangs that travel in excess of 200 mph both lost control while in the air at the same time. One came home and went from being a single model to being hundreds of pieces of a model in a field. The rest you can hear for youself...
