okay ... well I'm a newbie. I've done the car thing, I've done the airplane thing and now ... seeing as how my new home is near a good size man made pond, I'd like to try sail boating.

I don't intend to race, I just want to spend a lazy day at the park. I've checked out the AMYA web site, and while it's got tonnes of info, I think it has a little too much info. I'm just looking for suggestions on where to start. I just want a nice stable boat that I can practice and learn on...those 1 meter solings(?) look interesting but are they for me? I have no idea.

thanks
thomas

A good beginner boat is the Kyosho Fairwind. Easy to assemble, and a very forgiving boat. Keel will easily slip thru weeds and not get hung up. If your pond has weeds stay away from the "blade & bulb" boats as they do get hung up in weeds.
You can purchase new at most hobby shops, also you will find a fair amount of used boats around. People sell them as they move up into more competitive boats.

I'd also suggest checking out the AMYA site (too much info, my word...<g>) Getting Started section, if you buy the only Fairwind in a 3 county area, and everyone else is sailing V-32's, you're gonna be a bit bummed when you want to race.

Double check the Getting Started section at http://www.amya.org/start.html look into what's
being sailed locally, what used boats might be available with a seasoned skipper to help you along.

Believe me, I know what its like to have a one of a kind boat that no one else races within an 8 hour drive. Shoot, I've sailed more borrowed boats in regattas 4 hours away than sailing my own boats in regattas. Live and learn...

AMYA Webmaster with too much info to pass along...

Any plans out there, or is it too hard to make a sail?
Thanks

Dave,

If you can make a glider, ( or a Dustik :p ), that flies, then you can make a boat, or even a yacht !

Just working with a few different materials - that's all !

I've designed all sorts of things - almost everything but for a hovercraft, and an ekranoplan - and I'm working on those, too !

Oh ! And rockets - I've never been too keen on models with fire . . . :)

My wooden yacht has a crude hard chine type hull, with a cabin amidships, and was never too pretty - but she sailed very well ! ;)
I made it in 1989, and fitted it out with my 1974 FutabaM6 R/C oufit !

I'll see if I can dig out an old photo - might take a week or two . . . I'll scan one and e-mail it to you !
I could try to find the model, at a push . . . I think it's still in my garage, somewhere, has been for years !!!

Keven. :D

Dave,
You wrote

If you mean a set of sails, theres a bit of an art to making good sails, but, if you mean a sail boat, there are some plans available, some even free, (Check the AMYA's US 1M construction guide) or the AMYA's Ships Store for some for purchase.

There've been plans for other boats in Model Builder and RCModeler (RCM) plans section as well as from Traplet in the UK.

Traplet has the WeeNip free plans at
http://www.traplet.com/mmi/weenip.lasso
and if you go to their store, more plans for sale.
Look under One Metres, Ten Raters, Scale Sail, Multi-hulls, Marbleheads, and Misc. and Easy to..

There's a very good set of books from Ragged Symmetry Ltd. about making sails also.

Here's some links

Thanks thats a nice one :)
Have the plans now, how does one print them?
Do you have to go to Kinkos and have them printed out?

Lovely model isn't it ?

Ideal for my 28-year-old Futaba M6 radio . . .

I got the magazine that featured it, a month or two ago ;)

Dave,

Open the TIFF document with Adobe Photoshop or similar, and there will be an option to print under 'File' :)
