ok i know this has nothing to do with rc but its just as important, my satellite receiver! i wanted to stick my receiver in a drawer but the remote sensor needed to be extended so i sniped the pins off the eye and sodered some wires to itto extend it. it worked fine until one of the wires came off and i had to resoder but this time i used to much heat on the eye and it no longer works! my question is what is this IR receiver called so i can get a new one from digi-key or radio shack. it has 3 legs and looks like a transistor but with a eye on the top........any help would be great...thanks jeff

Are you talking about a component like this? http://www.vishay.com/docs/82095/82095.pdf

Post a picture of the sensor. I have many, some new, some used. If I have a match I'll PM you to get your address. I'll just drop it in the mail, no charge.

Its a phototransistor: All transitsors are light sensitive, but mostly they are kept in the dark...pretty good sensors too with quite decent bandwith.

Its a phototransistor.
No, it's a intergrated IR receiver, not simply a phototransistor. Schmitt triggered amp, buffered output and some with sync timing and internal voltage regulation. Static or heat can damage them.

No idea, you might have to try them all, or analyse the signal that is send using a osciloscope, for this purpose you can even use one of those osciloscopes that use your soundcard

Good Luck!

38kHz worked for me. My receiver is a Scientific Atlanta digital cable box.
They're not that expensive anyways, so you can always buy all the frequs and check which one has the longest range - that's what I've done and I checked a couple of web sites (mainly the LIRC unix pages) to confirm it
