View Full Version : Ailerons behind twin props

I've been able to start switching to brushless motors, but being a cheapskate I'm not willing to throw out a handful of brushed motors. Building a twin-engine model is starting to seem like an amusing way to put these older motors in use--but I've got a question about ailerons, assuming they'll be full-length for ease of mechanical linkages:

Assuming a 40-ish inch wingspan turning two 10-inch props, this would put half the aileron length in the prop wash. Does this make them more effective, given the airflow blown over their surface, or less effective, not being in a clean airflow?

definitely makes them more effective.

More effective.

I have had one case of a twin model having aileron flutter when the exact same wing and aileron setup and linkage and servi on a single engine model at the same speed did not have that issue.

Appeared to be caused by turbulence from the fairly large engine nacelles, disturbing the airflow over the aileron behind each engine nacelle.
