View Full Version : Anyone Flying Any Twins???

Anybody have any of the twin-engined planes from the Hobby Lobby fleet?
P-38, De Havilland Mosquito, B-25 or maybe the Bf-110?
I am looking into trying something new, and was wondering how the twins fly and build...

I had the JR P-38 for awhile . (from HL) .Nice kit ,,I never built.
Sold it to a fellow in Australia . If you want retracts and all that it will take some work as there are no mounting provisions in the P-38 .Plus the plane is a little on the small side .Other than that it's an easy "build" .I don't know about the B-25, but it is a bigger bird.
K&A makes a P-38,
real pretty KA bird here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=394352
Esprit model has a few twins including a nice composite BF110 with retract wells but it is $$$. (Savex i think)
Only twin I fly right now is the GP DC-3 / C47 so it kinda is a military plane ...cool sound ,easy to fly but more like a fighter than a transport/airliner :)
A friend flies an 83" VQ P-38 conversion axi 4130's and 6s4p x 2 :D
it's damn impressive and flew great,,
I shot some vid of the maiden under failing light :

good luck and hope you find one you like ,
twins are fun ;)

Wow, thanks for all the info - I am definitely interested in getting a twin here pretty soon, something different to 'light the fires' so to speak.
The thing I am wondering about the FS P-38 is the Axi 2208-34's that HL suggests to use with the plane...just doesn't seem like it would be enough power to me - but I am still a beginner with all the watts/amps/thrust figures...

The FS P-38 is a sweetheart of a flying machine. Grooves well, is smooth and very predictable. It is a tad underpowered, but it will loop from level flight, rolls like the real one....don't know what else you'd want to do with a scale model.
Fly-bys are really special.

My JR Models Mosquito (from Dymond RC). Very nice flyer with Mega brushless & LiPo.
Used to have a JR Models P-38 (from Hobby Lobby) lost it to the famous "lawn dart maneuver". That one was powered with Mega 16/15/7's, 3s2p ThunderPower, and Graupner 7x7's. A very sweet plane, easy to hand launch, nice speed range.
Currently working on an Aeronaut F-7F Tigercat. I'll post pictures when finished.

Hey Speed, I am interested in getting a Mossie like yours and see that Esprit model sell them for $249. That seems expensive but maybe not. Could you tell me otherwise? I have Scopio Mossie and it flys great but hate the scale look, and don't like hollow moulded foam, it's too fragile,

If the model is already covered with the ultracote type stuff then that's a good price. Dymond is higher.

No retracts fitted to my smaller models for 2 reasons. 1) We have a nice grass field & 2) I don't want to bother with the extra weight, structural additions, and complexity.
The Mosquito does have plenty to room in the engine nacells if you wanted to go the retract route.
I've not hand launched it, the model has a nice fuselage shape for a good grip though.
I just have a hook on it and bungee either off the grass (belly sliding) or off rails if I have them along.

OK, said I'd post pix of my Aeronaut F-7F Tigercat build.
It's coming along-slowly. My EDF's have been getting more attention.
Will be powered roughly like the Mosquito:
R-2800's - Ooops, I mean Mega 16/25/4's
CC Phoenix35's
3s3p ThunderPower
Aeronaut carbon 9.5x7's (the Mosquito uses 8.5x7's)

No, I'm asking if it will fly if you had one motor fail, and the other still works.

Might have a problem with torque and it would pull way more on the side still running, Believe it or not the thing glides great.

No work on the "Cat of late. Too busy with work and a nose end rebuild of my F-84 EDF that mid-aired with a SlowStick.
The kit is from AeroNaut (Europe), Hobby-Lobby here in the US did stock them at one time but not lately. They say that they can special order them.......
ductedfans.com has them, http://www.ductedfans.com/planes_E_tigercat.html

The DH.103 Hornet by WarbirdKits.com is a great-flying twin! This built-up balsa kit features vacuum-formed cowls, canopy and nose cone, and builds your choice of the F.1 or F.3 Hornet. It is designed to be powered by two Speed-400 motors.
Check our Web site for more info, photos, free downloads, etc.

Prop are 9 inches, but did not try for flying, to avoid issue at landing.
Motor bulkhead are of poor plywood, and even with 2 blades prods, it's sometimes a problem. I should have fit some retracts !!!

Tom, did you have any luck running your twin-axi powered twins on a single brushless controller?
If so, what setup?
Galaxy models makes some nice s400/s480 sized twins (DH Mosquito, DH-88, W. Whirlwind):

I built their DH-88 Comet and it was faaast already five years ago

I flew my new FlyingStyro P-38 for first time yesterday. The set-up is as recommended by Hobby Lobby. The plane had ample power and showed little or no tendency to torque on the hand launching. The P-38 was actually much easier to fly than my Alfa La-7. I used Tom Hunt's idea of mounting the 2 1320mah batteries vertically under the cockpit and I didn't have any trouble balancing the plane.

Herb
No, all my brushless twins use two controllers. I tried one (a number of brands) but could not get both the start reliably on the ground.
Though more expensive, and of course a little heavier, two ESC's have a great advantage of allowing you to use differential throttle for steering on the ground. It became necessary on the BF-110 as it does not have rudders (and on this model not easy to actuate) A steerable tailwheel (and the extra servo) also adds cost and weight.
Now if i could just get a prop to feather..... I could do some great engine out stuff and restarts!

My twins:
Bf-110 - built from Gus Morfis plan 44"
Pe-2 - scaled up from Mike Midkiff plan 49"
Me-262 - scaled up from Morfis plan ( 3 short flights, still working on trim) 61"
P-38 - from Jim Ryan plans- great flier
B-25 - from M. Rittinger plans ( bit the dust when one spur gear stripped out and torqued in)

Posted this in the power fourm and got no help.
Got me a new AXI 2820/10 to go with my existing Axi for my Aeronaut F7F-3 Tigercat and ran into a problem
The new motor has a different size casing.
Need to insure both motor have the same output.
Does anyone have any knowledge of the difference between motors.
Will have to tach them to see if they have the same RPM and check the amp draw.
Got hold of a couple APC 3 bladed 9x6 but think I might get a bit more thrust out of a bigger 2 bladed prop.
Don't want to have different thrust motors inducing unwanted yaw.

Hi Larry,
there is always a small différence on the electric motors. I have two axi 2814/12 in my tigercat, and there is about 50/75rpm of difference between the two motors, and they are of the same production run. Note it's note noticiable in flight, but higher it would be !!!
I think you better look for the same "case" for your axi 2820/10, or conduct bench test to insure they turn the same way..... I think it should be usefull.

I have a question for all of you,
I have a Bridi Tigercat kit that is destined to be brushless powered. Is there a product available to link the separate power systems? This would be relivant in the event of a thermal shutdown or low voltage situation. I want to be sure the motors are either both on or both off!
SPEED-E-FLYER
Oct 26, 2005, 09:24 AM
Plug the ESC's into Y harness is the only way I know.
I plan not to fly so long as to worry about the low voltage cut-off.
Same with the Thermal Shutdown. I will be prop below maximum. recommend amp draw.

Larry,
With the 2814/12 (old series as your silver one)and 9.5*6 aeronaut props hand launch is no problems on 8 nicad/nimh sub C cells. Total draw around 40amps
Both motors are in Aeronaut 600 front motor mount, they are perfect for axi 28 series.... A good thing to know.
The Tigercat is a great Flyer, it's a rock in flight. Ailerons are a delight, rudder as good as need it, and elevators OK.
I run the motors with 2 controllers, old but really soft MGM comPro TMM 40-3PH.
I've disconnect bec, and use a separate battery for receiver....
This lead to a heavy plane at 2.300Kg.

The Amiot 143 was a French medium bomber (1935-1940) : http://avions.legendaires.free.fr/amiot143.php
My plane is one of my oldest model (4 years old) and many fly. The plane is 1,5m wing span, 1,5 kg. After several engines (400, permax 480) the plane is now flying with two cheap brushless (two controlers) and 6A, 11V Lipo battery (3s5p Etec 1200) with give a very long flying time (>20 minutes)
The plane is strange to flight, this very thick wing (Naca 4415) with more than 30cm chord (scale) and a high body give strange result : at low speed during turn the plane can sudendly decide to turn on the other side

Tom,
How is the build on the D-18? Is it very prone to snapping if slowed down too much with such a tapered wing? How much for the vac formed parts? I would love to have a Twin Beech or Electra.
Thanks,
David
