Does anyone know of any high quality balsa kits for warbirds? I'm looking for a P-40 kit but would like to have other warbirds of this size. I found some with 30 inch wingspans but would like them a bit larger...something with room for retracts. I have a "House of Balsa" 35" T-6 Texan that is pretty good but I don't want to go any smaller.

HOB has a nice 43" P-51. Check out Laser ArtsP-51 (http://www.laserarts.com/product_info.php?cPath=25_29&products_id=201) too.

Hey warbirdday: I'm with you. I have been searching for a P40 in the 50in.WS 3lb range for almost a year now. I can't believe nobody is making warbirds in this size. I think this is the perefect size. your batts dont have to be to big or expensive and you have room for retracts.

Closest thing I know of to that is Sure Flight's P-40 if you don't mind foam.

Yah I've seen those and think they look pretty good, but I'ld prefer a balsa build.

Maybe some company will see this thread and decide to manufacture some birds in that size.

Yeah, I'm starting to like the .25 size warbirds. The GP Combat Corsair and P-51 are nice planes. I also like the Ripmax Spit but it's a big bullet to bite.
GSP has a 54" P-40 ARF with glass fuse and built up wings.

Found it! Turnkey RC has a 41" P-40 kit. Click on the link then click on Check Six Plans then click on the P-40.

HOB has an electric P51 kit with a 48" wingspan (actually 46.5").

It isn't very scale though. It does not have the LE wing crank of the "D" version, but rather a straight LE (like the "H" version).

Depends on how scale you want to get with it, but many have built it and I've read it flies very well for them.

Don't forget the Laser Arts P-51 (http://www.laserarts.com/product_info.php?cPath=25_29&products_id=201) . It's a nice model with retracts. Here is a post of some pictures of my son's P-51 (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4182068&postcount=413)

If you find a P-40 let me know :) . The special 'retracts' would be the problem in this size I think though .....

Whoops, I see someone already posted that website :o ...

45.1" span
367 sq in
3 1/4 lbs electric, with NiMH's, hand launch

As shown uses spring air retracts and has dual, operational bomb drops. Weight is just over 3 lbs, glow. With LiPo/AXI, climb would be stronger, part-throttle acceleration much better, and weight would remain about the same.

Winds are about 20-25 MPH at the time this picture was taken.

Also try Mark R's plans for a P 40

Ron:

Your planes look great. Any plans to do some US warbirds in the 20/25 size.

HOB = House of Balsa

Mark R's = Mark Rittinger (I have the P-40 in process, from plans. 42"ws, auw 2 3/4#)

www.rwdrc.com produces some very fine kits.

I have plans for several proven, nice flying birds in 42" span size. Most have foam wings, but some have wood on plans also.
I have SBD Dauntless, Hurricane, P40E, P51 ABCD Reno,Bf109E/K/Hispano ha1112,Avia S199, Fw190, and Ki61 Tony. Scaling up to 50" yeilds a nice model, though they are great flying birds at 42". All are hand launched, but adding gear/retracts would not be hard with exception of the Warhawk (rotating gear)

RBCKits (http://www.rbckits.com/) produces some nice looking kits around the size you're after. No P40 though as far as I know. A friend of mine built their Mustang and it's pretty sweet, though he's a very experienced builder so perhaps this reflects more on his skill than the kit's quality, I don't know.

I remember seeing an RBC Spitfire build thread around here at some point, and if I recall the builder added retracts. Search for it if you're interested.
