I am in the process of building a Henry Cole 'Smoothie' with a single retractable gear. I am assuming that it retracts after ROG and remains that way until landing. But what keeps it extended until after takeoff?

A rubber band retracts the gear.
When the model is on the ground, its weight keeps the gear extended until the wheel is off the ground.

Hi
Nice project and nice plane.
Yes it is a rubber band that causes the lg to retract when the plane leaves the ground.
In the link below you can find the original constructional article and an excellent exploded view who may help.
