HPI Savage tune up questions

I have a HPI Savage SS25. I'm having a devil of a time getting it to run
properly. I purchased this used. I first set the idle adjustment opening to
2 mm, then adjust the low speed needle to 3 turns out. I return to the
original settings of 4 1/2 turns out on the high speed needle. It will run
pretty good but will not idle down. I try turning the needles in at 1/8
increments but it seems to get worse. After it starts I try to manually gun
the engine but when the throttle is at idle the engine still runs very high
RPM. If i close the idle adjustment the low speed idle needle is off and
Obviously when the RPM is high you can't control it very well. Should the
idle adjustment be the first thing to do and then work on the high speed
needle adjustment? What am I doing wrong?

You're doing it bassackwards man!

First off, the idle is set too high. It should be 1mm open or less. The
engine will have trouble running with this idle setting with the HSN and LSN
set at the factory settings as it will be super rich and will want to stall
out. Use your radio throttle trim to open the throttle a bit more to keep
her running.

Set the HSN first, aiming for max RPM's and speed at WOT without overheating
or overleaning.

After HSN is set, adjust LSN for max takeoff speed without overleaning.

After HSN and LSN are both set, adjust the idle so it idles where you want
with the throttle trim in the neutral position.

um... when you gun the throttle (full) does the engine dies? if that
is the case then it sounds like the low end might have set too lean. I
would really richen up the low end, then see if the high pitch idle
sound would go away. if the situation improves, then i will start
messing with the high end needle. but otherwise, as far as the idle
screw, i would just set it up to the point that when you brake the
engine won't die.

The manual says to set the idle speed adjustment to about 2 mm. However, I
took your advice and closed it to about 1 mm and it reduced the idle speed
to a tolerable RPM. I richened up the low speed needle and I can actually
drive the truck around my yard. I think if I keep messing with the low speed
needle I can make this workable.

Tune HSN FIRST, then LSN. HSN effects LSN as well, so if you set LSN first,
then tune the HSN you're right back where you started from.
