I'm an AMA member planning a vacation near Charlevoix, Michigan and would like to try my hand at slope soaring. Are there any slope sites anyone could recommend ? It'll be my first experience, so I don't want to slope soar on a cliff where I might lose my plane.

Greetings from Petoskey, about 15 mi north of Charlevoix. Myself and 2 other zealots are doing most of the sailplane stuff up in this part of the North. If there are any others we sure would like to hook up with them. There is a power/electric club in both Charlevoix and Petoskey. We could help with thermal sailplane stuff as we have a winch cart and private field that we use but the slope stuff is compleatly untried by us. Jim Johnson (231-938-1272) is the president of the Traverse City club LIFT and is always very generous/helpfull/knowledgeable about local flying opertunities. I would also send a note to Larry Stori ( LSFV@coslink.net) as he lives near the Frankfurt/Alberta area which does have a municiple slope site and is the epicenter of slope soaring in the north. There are also some sites at the Sleeping Bear Dunes Park, but both the park and Frankfurt are 2-3 hours away and someone else would have to tell you just where you need to go for that. Give me a call a week or two ahead of time and I will let you know my days off if you would like to do some thermal seeking. Warmest regards, Mike Banyai cell 231-330-0910 H 231-348-3595

I haven't tried any of these, but here is a link that might help.

Better yet, just go to the main page of www.slopeflyer.com. Greg lives just on the other side of the lake in Wisconsin and I'm sure he can direct you to many sites within reach for you.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll try the Empire area.
