I just built a Tiger 50 (http://audacitymodels.com/), real simple build and "almost" flew right out of the box. I would suggest you find a pilot in your area to help with radio setup though.
The reasons I bought it:
- One of the cheapest new helis to fix. Example: tail boom $9
- 3D capable it comes in a more stable set up with lead weights and short swash controls but the extensions are in the box and you "pull the lead out" for 3D.
- Since it is CCPM you can use the cheaper/slower servos at first if you not going into hard 3D
- Great support
Cheack out some videos here and if you doubt the Tigers 3D ability check out the Markus Kim video (http://www.audacitymodels.com/webvideo/video_downloads.htm) ;)

I say buy a Raptor KIT and put the sucker together so you know how it works.
Get help from someone to set it up for you .
After all the work to buy, build, setup,,money ,get help,,then you can try to do the Basics in real life with NO reset button.
I'll bet if like me when I started [I trained on RealFlight] even with ALL the heli's you crashed on the SIM ,,,when it comes to the REAL Thing,,that's all yours ,,with all your time and money in it,,when you do your first pathetic loop,,,,you will crap your pants,,,

I second that, real life and real flight(sim) are very different. Get a heli that parts are cheap for and you can get at your LHS. A T-rex is cheap and fly well or a R-30 is cheap also. When learning to do 3D in real life expect to buy a few heli's as crashes do happen.....Impact

I have a raptor 50 and love it help is need for the setup but besides that it flies great and is almost always inverted now. I too am learning but this heli flies itself. The 30 size is great it was my first heli but I never did any real 3d with it. I totalted it trying to do inverted so. Good luck and happy flying
