I've noticed that there is some demand for cheap speed controllers out there. Or at least that's how it seems.
So I'd like to collect tips on how to find/make cheap controllers, preferably for high amps also as some boats/motors can draw a lot. ;)

I myself like to just increase the capasity of small (cheap) commercial controllers with FETs. Instructions for it I found here: http://lennokki.innoplaza.net/
Schematic's found under the link named "Mallikytkis".

An example: a GWS ICS-50 $15 + 4*IRFZ44N $1 each. Total: $19, takes 30amps without cooling.

The amount of FETs that can be added is unlimited, about one FET for every 5 amps recommended if there is no added cooling.

If you can get your hands on one, the MIMIR esc from CTI can handle 30V 50Ah continuously without cooling (34,00 Euro incl. shipping in Europe).

Why bother soldering?
Hi-Tec EZX-R does 46A fwd and has simple reverse, good for scale boats running NiMH/NiCd, $35. See my ESC review at http://geocities.com/y2patmat/

Soldering's worthwhile when you can't get a hold of any cheap controllers othervice.
Ever heard of Finland in northern Europe?
Neither have controller manufacturers.

And shipping costs to here can sometimes be somewhat unreasonable BTW.

I only use car controllers and in general they are at least 30% cheaper. Reverse usually has a delay built in and at lower spped than forward. Useful to have in general.

Tony, even the mtronics marine range have a reduced reverse top power setting,

Nevertheless, mail Helmut and ask what he'd charge you for the MIMIR, you might be surprised...
I just ordered a pair for 68 Euros incl.shipping.
