I currently have r/c trucks, cars, and i am considering a boat.
BUT. I find that I can drive my r/c truck anywhere, anytime. I can launch it off jumps and climb over stuff. its great fun.
but my r/c car needs to go to a parking lot, or other big open flat area, and its boring, no jumps, it just zips around, and thats kinda mundane.
I am concerned that if I invest in a boat i would be in the same position as the car. id have to drive to a park with water, not really a big deal. but once i get there, is it going to be just like driving the rc car in a parking lot?
I am considering the traxxas villian, or the duramax boat thats like 79 bux. electric is a must. how fast do these go on the water? any advice would be great.

What do you want to do with a boat? If you want to go fast and turn right, fast electric deep vees or hydroplanes are appropriate. If you want to test your skills at navigating through sets of buoys or demonstrate things like water cannons, horns & whistles, then a scale boat is best. A submarine lets you operate in three dimensions, under the water. With R/C combat ships you can relive the Battle of Leyte Gulf and shoot at the other guys model.
Here are some sources to check:
Scale Boats (http://www.ssmana.org/)
Submarines (http://www.subcommittee.com/)
Fast electrics (http://www.namba8.com/)
Combat (http://www.swampworks.com/SwampworksHomePage-2.html)
I have a working model of a DUKW (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=276680&highlight=DUKW+) - the amphibious 2 1/2 ton cargo truck of WWII. The model has 6 wheel drive and a propellor.

Yes.

If you find that driving a car around in a parking lot, going crazy fast; doing slides; and the sheer speed of the thing; is boring........ you will really be bored with boats.

Pretty much, yeah.

Not very. About 15-20 mph in box stock form.

Yeah, it's kinda like a wet parking lot, with ducks. Try to find others to run your boat with, it's always more fun to run with and race others. There should be a club or two in your area, ask around at the hobby shops. If you want to launch off jumps and run on ground and water, you might want to look into airboats. Here's an airboat forum you might want to check out: http://rcairboats.net/v-web/bulletin/bb/index.php . Plenty of great folks there, like here, that are more than willing to answer your questions.

Tachikaze lives in Eugene.
Contact Oregon Podiatry Clinic
2893 Oak St, Eugene, 97405
He drives cars and helped to start the RC car club out of Eugene toys and hobbies.
He also runs two destroyers, a small schnell boat.
There is also a fairly large group of fast electric and gas/nitro boaters that run on a pond in Springfield. Someplace behind an old jetski manufacturing shop.

I think if i got to actually test drive a boat it may make up my mind for me. where I live theres a lot of ducks, (Eugene, Oregon) i think it would be fun to hav an R/C duck to toodle around in the water with the ducks. lol. but I'll have to find someone to bum a drive off of locally to see if I can get the boat bug off my back.
15-20 out of the box is plenty fast for anything i'd wanna do anyways. and I like the way the deep V's look. I like the way yachts look too. we'll see what happens once i take a test run.

koala, my personal style is for luxury cruisers and merchantman, if ya want a kit, the robbe najade is good, if ya wnt it RTR, try the graupner saint tropez, its about the same size, though the microwitch will need to be replaced by an ESC.
the Ripmax interceptor is good for an RTR, just ensure the rudder is well sealed. but as Umi said, get in contact with tachi, as he is local to ya

Ahoy
there is a company that makes DUCKS (not DUKW). CG bob has a army anfib. the ducks are malords. both are fun but the ducks don't come out of the water like the DUKW does. as said be for, depending what your looking for. it sounds to me like you will get tired of all but the combat. there you sink the other guy be for he sinks you. then you all pull your boats in, patch them and go fight again.
good luck witch ever you do.

It looks like you missed the Event in Springfield by one weekend too bummer. :(
http://www.namba8.com/Schedule.htm
The schedule says they race in Springfield twice a year on Berzar Pond- Springfield, OR
I am not sure if this is the pond, but the locals may practice and run here off of Highbanks road, in front of the the white warehouse like building.

Well, not every time. Not if you paint it bright yellow and it sings goofy kid's songs: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=393475
