View Full Version : My B7?7 free flight conversion

Inspired by Rudi's Airforce Flyer foam glider conversion, I decided to take a stab at my own chuck glider conversion. I Call It the B7?7 because I'm not sure if it looks more like a 757 or a 767
The airframe is an AirForce Flyer available from tower hobbies. I hollowed out the fuselage with a hot wire to reduce weight, so the fuse is about 1.5cm thick. I also cut about 7cm off of the nose and added it it the aft section of the fuse to get more scale proportions.
The engine nacels are made from two layers of 3mm Depron. I softened up the depron by bending it over the edge of the table, then I just wraped the softened depron around the edf 40 and rounded the edges with some 120 grit sandpaper. The nacels are attached to the wings on 6mm depron pylons that are reenforced with some sheet abs.
I made a new tail out of 6mm depron, and used shockflyer pushrods and horns to control the elevons.
All up weight is around 300 grams, with a 3 cell 730 mah thunder power pack
I squeezed in a quick maiden before the sun went down and I was pleased with the performance. I'll post flight pics and vid as soon as i get a chance

Hello MIT KID,
congratulation !!!! Hope you like it as I have done it.Once in the air you can reduce throttle to half and you can cruise around so nice. For my bad luck I lost it during some heavy glitches, but I will build a new (Airbus fuse) arround that great wing from the airforcegliderkit as soon as my motivation to build a new airliner will come back ;)
Why didn't you mount the servos in the backfuse so that the are not visible and I think the edf40 will not have a long live with a 3S Lipopack.
In which outfit will you paint it ?
For a more scaleapear you can cut the fin a littlebit ( I cut away the rudder on mine for a prefect scaleapear (look at my pictures)

Nice :D
Looks like a 767 to me. The 757 always seems to look longer with skinnier wings ( i lovingly refer to it as the flying sausage).
Only thing is you've really confused things with your airbus a320 winglets hehe.
I'm gonna have to stop looking at these depron airliners. I've got enough projects on the go already.

Rudi- I mounted the servo's so far forward to get the C of G right, as is my batt is all the way up in the nose. I wasn't terribly concerned with scale appearance I just wanted something that worked. As for the EDF 40 on 3 cells, I'm using the edf 40 fans but I replaced the motor with a gws knockoff rated for 3 cell use. I cant remember the name of the mfg but I'll look it up when I get a chance. Still I watch where I keep the throttle and I avoid full throttle other than for takeoff and short bursts. To keep the painting weight down I'm thinking of going with the virgin atlantic sceme, red rudder, red nacels, and a couple of stickers.
--thanks for all of the Ideas.
Fenix- I know the tip fins don't really match any other part of the plane, but I think they make the overall appearance better. Besides, my girfriend thinks they are cute :)
Netmechanic- I know there's a bed under there somewhere. Besides who needs a bed, 'cause we don't get much of a chance to sleep at this school LOL.

Makes sense to me. I can spend a lot more money on RC Modelling stuff if my girlfriend thinks the model i'm building is cute.

The last thing my girlfriend would say about modelling is "cute" , consider yourself lucky ;)

After flying this plane for a week its still in one piece...so I figured I should decorate it. I went with the virgin atlantic scheme since there's not a whole lot of paint you need to add to the model. I used a Copic extra wide perminant marker to add the color. The tip is over an inch wide so its easy to get a very even color application, and you dont get that blotchy pinstriped look that usually happens when you try to color a large area with a marker.
Rudi- how did you create the decals for the windows and doors on your 757? If you could post where you got them from, or the jpg file you used to make them that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam

WOW!!! That looks fantastic. Now, where can I get one locally? I checked my local Wal Mart and they do not have them. Also checked Toy's R Us too. I gotta get one to convert. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Wow... Way to wake up an old thread. You can get the airforce glider from tower hobbies. I think its like $7

I found one nearly identical at a local ACO store for $3. Glides nice, really nice. So, I slapped some junk on it leftover from an aborted RTF (too many crashes) and chucked it.
Must be ghosts of the previous plane, because it crashed too. Still fun to glide. I like that when it crashes, the wings fold forward. A bit comical.
I will someday attempt a ducted fan conversion too, since twin rotor power looks a bit off on this plane. :)

Hi Dent,
Is the glider an "Air Force flyer"? My local TRU had LiFoam gliders, but the wrong ones. I will check the local ACO for them. If not, I will just order from Tower Hobbies.

Hmm.. I am not sure if that was the one. I didn't keep the packaging, and gave the sticker sheet to my daughter. :)
There are cosmetic differences between this one and mine. The one I picked up actually has indentations in the fuse for the cockpit and passenger area windows.

The one at TRU is not the same. I have both... originally I started on the one from TRU... but after seeing this one on Tower some while back... I got this one. Or three.
I haven't started on any of mine yet... I wanted to do EDF like you did, but it hangs way below the belly.
Do you still belly land yours?

In retrospect I should have made break away mounts for the motors (similar to the cox edf's), but after nearly a year of flying its still in one peace. To belly land I usually put it in the tall grass to avoid nacel damage, but I prefer grabbing it out of the air now that I'm used to the way the plane handles :)

Yahoo! My B7?7's (all 3 of them) are being delivered today. I will start on them soon. Now, I have 2 EDF 50's Im planning on using along with some
Bluebird 3.6g servo's and a Blue bird rx. Should make for a very light set-up. Now, Im on the fence as to a battery pack.

That thing looks like a 757 with out the winglets and once you put them on you could maby say its a A321. Virgin Atlantic does not have any 757s. But they do have A321s! So I would go with calling it A321. Just my two cents.
But that thing does look cool!
Thanks

Put a scale vertical stab on it. It adds so much to the appearance. I put foil
paper on the tail feather leading edges and it looked SO NEAT when the sun
would reflect off of it. As far as I know (and not that it matters) this was the
first 757 here to be made out of 2 kits. I added a small fuselage section ahead
of, and behind, the wing section. Somewhere in the forums you can read about
the details. I used the EDP-150 motors and all was fine. When I upgraded to
speed 300's it was very hard to control and did a high speed dive into hard
ground.
Nice job on yours btw. :)
My old AA 757. I really want to try this again. A GREAT flyer! :D

Hawker,
Do you have a drawing or outline of the vertical fin which you used on your AA? I would really like to do that on my 7?7.
Thanks

There is a mold line for the rudder on the vertical stab. If you trim the stab along this line, you get a pretty close approximation to the scale outline.

Ah yes, very nice. I will try it out. Check this out. I ordered 3 Air force gliders from Tower Hobbies last week. One of them had a wing tip that was broken off. I didn't call them about it. I indicated in the survey they sent me that I recv'd a broken one and guess what? They sent me another free of charge! Now that's service! :)
