View Full Version : soldering braided wire

I have some brushes with 1/16 braided wire that need to be soldered to a 1/16 plate. I runed one set because the solder wicked way too much. I don't want to do the same to the next set. I've never tried to stop the wicking process. In fact I always thought it was pretty neat. Anyway, anybody have any suggestions on how to stop the wicking? Maybe clamping off, using hotter gun or cooler iron. Any ideas besides experimentation?
Thanks
Dale

Clamping is good - use a pair of pliers to keep that part cool. And a hot iron so you don't HAVE to heat the rest of the braid to get the bit you want hot.

I used a 60w iron. Think I should move to a 140w gun? The brushes and metal plate are detached and soldering is done on the bench so there are no magnets around.

May not be exactly proper, but for stuff slightly smaller, I put a good gob, on the PCB, cool it with ice, and then lay the braided wire over it and push down with the soldering iron, they when it starts wicking past the desired amount, I hit it with butane and then reheat it a bit.
