I recently bought a Hitec Focus 4 on Ebay. I tried it out today, without charging the battery pack and it seemed to work, so I hooked up the charger and went off to work. I came home, and the light on the charger was out, so I unplugged it and turned the tx on... nothing. The battery meater did not move. I put the multi meter across the battery pack... 6.4V, when earlier it read 9.4. There is now no continuity between the charging jack and the battery pack... Have I bought a highly complex paper weight??

Cheers

No, but you may have one with a fault that can't be corrected by the seller..:)

Like the FF6 I bought where the anteanna was dangling in the breeze..a little epoxy soon got it working.

Could be a duff charger or charging circuit..

Charge the pack separately and then see if the tranny works, then tackle the charger problem.

You can generally pick up the chargng warts for small money on ebay...or if its duff get the vendor to refund you...I'd be brurtal and if it was sold as in good working order, register a dispute immediately.

That's what I did when someone sent me a print server without power supply - it clearly said 'complete with power supply' in the item description when I bid on it. He tried to wriggle and pointed out that he had added 'without power suply' later (after I had bid) ..but he didn't want a dispute and negative feedback hanging over him so he refunded and I sent it back..

So first of all contact the vendor and explain the unit may be faulty: If he is uncooperative register a dispute.

Then get to the bottom of the problem. Try a separately charrged pack. If its the wart thats faulty get a price on a new one and tell the vendor thats what you will have to spend.

I'd also post this in the radios forum as someone there may know how the charging works.

Open the case up as well and look for anything obvious like a smoked diode etc.

Post pictures as well

I suspect that the battery pack is old and failed with an open cell during the recharge. As vintage mentioned, try another pack.

Thanks for your help guys. I did as was suggested and tried another nicad pack... but still no charge light. Turns out that there was a short in the plug from the charger! So its fixed and I don't have to buy a new tx. Thanks for the assistance!

Yep, and that's the luck of the draw. Sometimes on Ebay you get a perfectly good piece of kit at a knockdown price because there is one teeny easily fixed problem that the bozo seller hadn't sbeen able to..

Other times you get a heap of junk that the seller just manages to describe in a way that says 'caveat emptor' and you don't..:)
