DS's for the first time today, One word.. AWESOME!!!

I went to Hodges cause I figured if i couldnt figure out how to DS today I could always fly the front side. Before I left i was watching the news and the weatherman says, "the wind is really picking up out there." Thats when I started to get anxious about leaving. I'm always afraid the wind is going to die right before I get there because I didnt drive faster or leave sooner.

When I got out of my car at Hodges I could hear and see all the trees blowing....SWEET. I went straight to the top of the hill, threw out the BOSS, climbed up, and dove right in.

All this time I havnt been getting it because I was (A) Not staying close enough to the deck (thanks sl33pdirt) and (B) I wasnt coming out of the circle high enough to hit the shear.

So this time I dove in way low, and brought it up above the crest of the hill and yanked, Dude!!! It screamed down the backside bucking and yawing all over the place. I kept it low and came up again, yanked, Dude!!! One more time, Yank, Dude...Thump. I was laughing out loud in the middle of nowhere.

I didnt climb though that many bushes even when I was a novice trying to fly a warbird as my first slope ship. I hit every darn bush on that hill, EVERY SINGLE ONE!!!! It was fricken awesome. I always thought "c'mon, you dont need to start with foam for DSing if you can already fly well...." Good thing I dint listen to myself.

I always thought you guys were some kind of cult, you know, crazies. But I'm ready to buy my ticket on the space ship baby!!

More to come, I have to take a shower, burrs and stickers in all parts of my body are starting to hurt.

More to come,
Clint

You've done it now.
I sometimes wonder if a crack habit wouldn't be cheaper than the DS habit.

I still have it, can't bring myself to take the gear out of it. i also totalled my mach dart, tons of time on it, probably the best first crunchie dser you can get

My dart went down due to a dead battery, it must have false peaked on the charger.

Now you will have to make the trip to vincent or parker, you will be hooked

Cant wait to go up there. The MD will have servos in the wings probably next week. I bought two 5125's but cant afford two more digi's. Should the digis go on the flaps or the ailerons?

The boss that I bought from Tom is awesome. Solartex is da bomb, never use'n anything else.

put the digis on the ailerons, they are not necessary on the dart, regular 125's would do, especially since you cut flaps in, that reduces the aileron area by about a third, that is a good thing for dsing

put the word out when you are ready to go, maybe we can do a sd guys trip

take the 5125 back and get 4 125, you will not know or feel the difference. solartex is ok but ultracoat is much stronger, IMO, not as easy to work with but for ds strenght is what you want.

yeah, Ultracoat for DS for sure... well for faster DS anyways...

also agree on the 5125's returned... get 4 125's and your golden my MD went 171 with 3 81mg's in it..

You've crossed over to the "Dark Side"!! Use the force-- isn't that unbelievable. I'm still having fun with my JW!!! It ROCKS-- and doesn't BREAK!! I'll go glass one day-- but when you can go over 100mph with foam-- it's fun any day!
Welcome to the "Can't keep up with the Kyle's" neighborhood!!!

Clint, Thats awesome man...I'm totally stoked off your excitement for discovering DS. I saw the BOSS in person and thought it looked good. Do you own one of the prototypes?

The Boss will work fine for moderate DSing-- but if you get much speed--the spar isn't strong enought to keep it from major flexing. At least in the prototype I've got. Maybe Tom's beefing up the kit spar? I DSed mine at Vincent-- as it approached 100mph-- it started bending really bad-- it's great on the front side though-- will make a dynamite 60" foam MOM plane with a cool ballast box in it too! Turns hard and is fast in a straight line!

Yah, I plan on doing some racing with it, I never intended it to go really fast on the back side. I just wanted something that I could learn on. I'll buy a moth/electron/m60 at some point for really cool DSing, (but then, I've got the mach dart)

the boss is gonna hang with the m60 and electron... if you ever get going FAST your gonna need a JW.

Where are MD's and BOSS's sold?

Also what would you guys have to say about a Mini Blade as a first DS'er?- IM a skilled frontside pilot and used to speed, but apparently that dosnt matter :D

Cheers

the MB is a fine first DS'er... but i would say Destiny (soaringusa.com) or Machdart (rc-direct.com) because of the price...

the mach dart is not as fast as the destiny but flys in lighter lift
the destiny is faster but doesnt do LIGHT lift

destiny is a more complete kit, the MD you have to fabricate all linkages.

both are low 200's... the mach dart is 199 but you pay shipping, the destiny is 220 but you get free shipping..

as for the BOSS... i dont think its produced yet, its from f3x.com.... but from what ive seen, its not a great BIG WIND DS'er... its comparable to the m60 and electron. you want a foamie DS'er get a JW.. there is NO better for speed/strength/and ease of build in the foamie DS class...

Thanks Joe,
What about a U2 from california sailplanes...its EPP

Also I always thought the M60 and JW where evenly matched?

Cheers

do a search for U2 here and just LOOK at all thats involved in building... for a foamie... OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the m60 is a GREAT plane... it truly is... BUT its not a BIG wind DS'er... its great in the light stuff to even medium stuff... but every lap 110mph+ COULD be its last... but it has the advantage in frontside racing than the JW...

the JW is DS SPECIFIC, it flys good all around, BUT for frontside racing the M60 is faster... there is no comparison OUT OF THE BOX to the JW for foam... the JW out of the box PROPERLY built is 150+ ready so long as you have good gear in it...

if you plan on DS'ing parker and vincent with foam, get a JW and be ready for ANY wind to come your way...

Thanks Joe, sounds like the next foamie will be a J dub!!

I was going to buy a destiny, but I think Ill get some more foam. I have the mach dart for when I feel gutsy.

I went out again yesterday. On my way to the car I stepped on the neck strap of my transmitter and yanked it onto the pavement. I knew I should have bought a stupid case. So It seemed to work ok but a little glitchy. Wow, you really cant DS when your a little glitchy!! Sent the radio to pensacola and the plane got transferred to a back up transmitter. I also cut the antenna on the receiver, may have something to do with it.
Where the heck do you put the fricken antenna on planks when its too late to bury it in the foam (its already covered with solartex).
