During the last few months I've been getting together with another guy from the Seattle area for some combat. I'm hooked! This is way to much fun. Most of the flying we do is with 1/2a powered wings. Here is my 36" wing I built from scratch with a Norvel Big Mig .061. Last time we got together he brought some 48" .15 powered wings. They aren't as lively as the 1/2a but still fun! If anyone is interested in joining us let me know... ! Right now we fly in Enumclaw or Arlington.

Hi Scudrunner,
I am very interested in your 36" combat wing design. Do you have any plans or dimensions available as I would like to try and build one out of 2mm correx.

The wing is 36" by 10". I borrowed the rib shape from the Sig Seniorita. I took a rib and scanned it and then sized it down till it was 9". The elevon is 1" tapered balsa. I used a wood dowel for the leading edge piece and 1/4 " square stock for the upper and lower spars. The upper spar is hardwood as is the servo rail that runs parallel. The RX and battery go inside the wing. Also made the hatch covers magnetic. This has worked really well, but a littlel over kill for a plane that could meet it's death at any time. The motor mount was ply wood cut out in to fit the shape of the center rib and epoxied on with small amount of fiberglass. It turned out I could not ballance the plane with the engine this close to the leading edge so I made extentions shown in the picture. I know it's not pretty, but I just wanted to make it work for the time being. The prop is now 5" in front of the leading edge. I will probably make a ply wood mount to replace the sticks and then move the 2 oz fuel tank forward for better pick up. The center rib is 5/16 thick and from the spar forward I made it three times as thick by glueing three pieces together for a beefy place to glue the engine mount. Servo's are HS-55. The winglets need to taper back a little for stability. The elevons are trimmed up quite a bit to make it fly level. I quess this is not uncommon for flying wings. Actually on the first flight the trim ran out so set it up will a little "up" elevon with the trim zeroed. I hope this helps. I'm sure making on out of depron would work out fine... Are you going with e-power or glow? I still can't believe just a wing will fly...looks crazy to me! :eek:

just a suggestion or two for your combat wings, sink those servo's down inside the wing and us carbonfiber rods for control rods they flex but dont bend , also double up your elevon control horns back to back using a small bolt and a ball link connector in the middle ;)

This is what I call a combat wing.
36" span, a GMS32 with tuned pipe turning 16,500 RPMs, 2.5lbs total weight and about 6lbs of thrust. It goes out of site vertically in less than 8 seconds and will loop tight enough to cut its own 90 foot streamer.
Made in a couple of hours from polystyrene, fiberglass, plywood and old plastic sign material.
And these things are *tough*!
A friend's one came straight in from about 200 feet onto the roof of a hangar at the airfield where we fly. It then slid down and fell another 18 feet onto the ground below.
The engine punched a hole in the hangar's iron roof and the wing dented the iron.
Total damage to the plane? 1 broken prop and a cracked plywood engine mount! A new prop, a bit of epoxy and you're flying again -- woo hoo!
Now *that's* exciting combat :-)

Hey I went to Enumclaw high school! I'd be down to get together and fly some time dude, I don't have any gas planes though but my friends do. hmmm my neighbors about to go to Alaska maybe he will let me have his planes?
