Great Idea for a forum!

Does anyone know if there are any .60-sized of bigger, designed for e-pwer WWII warbird kits out there?

Crashed my coverted TF AT-6 Texan...need a replacement.

I'm working on converting my TopFlight Gold Edition P47:

So far I've got at Hacker B50 11xl and a hacker master 77opto esc. Just need to find time to cover it.

The kit wasn't intended for Epower, but this one was built with Epower in mind. :)

I started a new thread, but maybe I should have just posted it here  I have a nice 60" EPP Hawker Hurricane sport plane from Plane Insane Models. It rocks :D Want a pic?

Sweet looking bird, what's the wing contruction? What have you done to lighten her up, if anything?

TRP
Aug 08, 2005, 04:05 PM
Thanks! Man - she's BIG!

Wing is built up and fully sheeted with 1/16 contest grade balsa. That's about all I've done to lighten up the wing.

We lightened up some of the ply formers in the fuse and have cut a few exit holes for cooling (behind the side scoops, rear belly scoop and in the fire wall.) The firewall could be used to build a table - it's STOUT hardwood. Boring holes in it should save some weight.

Right now it's loaded down with almost all of the electronics. It's missing the batts and motor - the rest of the goodies are already on board. I'm guessing that ready to fly she'll be close to 8.5lbs / 9.0 lbs.

I've seen guys flying World Models AFR warbirds which had nothing done to lighten them up and they fly fine.

We'll see... (*gulp* - now you've got me worried!)

I did a bit more work on it tonight.

Covered the right side. One Piece. Front to back, top to almost all the way to the bottom of the fuse. Looks good. I'll have to touch up around the wing saddle and around the super charge exhaust, but other than that looks good.

I'll have to tackel the left side tomorrow night.

Enjoy!

What about the GeeBee TRP?
I have been considering this same plane.
Keep us posted.

The Gee Bee?... gulp! It's just off to the right. Next up to be covered. Once I get back to the main land I'll complete this covering job. I learned SO much while covering the wing on the '47. I can't wait to get started on covering the GB.

Here are two more shots of my progress. All covered. Now the detailing starts. :)

p.s. - yeah.. yeah.. I realize the gear legs are swapped. The one which is on the left should be on the right and vice versa. I'll fix that after I paint them and do a tiny bit of detail on 'em.

Another day with more progress!

Shots from both the left and right with the mock radial, cowl, side vents, and bottom super charger vent all painted..

Starting to really come along I'd say. As she sits (all loaded up with EVERYTHING minus the motor, esc, and battery) she weighs 5.5lbs. My guess is that she will top out aroundd 8.5 lbs.

Thanks!

After watching Flybike put together his Pink Floyd, I've thought about doing a VERY BIG Eindekker EIII.

The powerplant options are definitely coming along.

Thanks! There is a lot more to go on this one. I still need to add panel lines, stars, bars, guns, etc. etc. Should be fun. I'm kind of worried about the wind loading - so we'll see.

4000 watts of power will fly it, if you keep it around 30ish...doable!

How much is the Giant P-47 in the bargain bin???

LOL... when I first read your reply (Bill) I was thinking you were talking about 4000W for my '47. I had to read it twice.

I didn't even know they made a Giant version of the '47! How much is the Giant '47 in the bargan bin?

Now I have to go and buy it!
Don't remember but it's ~20lb
Tower says 20-22 but the engine weighs 2.4lb
If I can build it to 18lb that would be great.
I woll have to buy retracts tho.
Tower has it for $219
The batteries will cost ~$500 (ouch)
The motor/battery /ESC in my EDGE weigh 1.4lb and put out 1,700W
Maybe I should stick to the H9 ARF that's about to come out.

Very nice Ted

so 5.5 target 8.5 ---- 3 pounds of motor and batt ...

That should do it :) . What cells do you intend to use ?

sorry if I missed it .

I have an old kyosho and H9 P-40( h9 converted) they are very light compared to the nice TF '40 I've seen. Don't look nearly as good ,but relatively modest power ca 900-1,000 watts flys them nicely.

Seems alot of the arfs just frame and cover the tail group. As well as using lighter construction aft the cockpit. Seems like good places to try to save some weight when building a nice kit for EP. May also help get the CG where it needs to be .

continued good luck with the build, look forward to more !

I've picked up a Hacker B50 11XL geared at 4.4/1. The cells are still up in the air. I know it will be lipo, I'm just not sure what config. Maybe 10s3p? 6s4p? We'll see. Aside from my 80 inch super cub this will be my first really big ePowered plane - so I'm still unsure on which batteries to use. I'm thinking 800 - 1000w (1kW!) should do the trick. :) I'll be soliciting help in the motor and power forum once I nail down the final weight.

I'll post more photos as I get closer to completing the weathering and detailing of this bird. I loaned my compressor to a buddy so it's going to be a few days before I complete the airbrushing of the cockpit, etc.

Maybe I should start my own thread for this bird? Think it's too late?

looks really, really nice Ted !

BTW I did make it to the tackle shop and got a scale so I'll be able to give my AUW .

Have you decided what cells you're going to power that beast with yet?

take care ~

Hello TSF,

I've made a bunch more progress this weekend. I'm pretty sure it's going to be 3s4p or 3s3p for this bird. I already have a 3s4p pack which I could use, but then I'll need to find another 3s4p pack to match it. If I want to spend some $$ I could get two of the new 3s3p Prolites and save 1/2 lb in battery weight @ the cost of about $420.00. ouch!

If I sell the brand new 3s4p pack I have I could recoup about 1/2 that cost. If I can find a new matching 3s4p pack to put in paralell with my existing pack - I'd save about $240.00 bucks or so, have longer run time. The only draw back is that my AUW will tip in around 9.5lbs.

Re: the progress on the bird: I have to finish some detail on the cowl (I have to craft that inner lip of the cowl), mount the canopy, paint and fasten the gear legs, mount the cowl, and mock up a battery tray.

I've posted these photos in two other threads.. I should really just start my own thread!

yeah prolly :)

P-40 comes in @ 8lbs 9oz AUW if that helps any ..

I feel your pain on the batts ,,,just got 2 Prolite 3s3p 6000 to run as 6s3p . $$$ ouch,,,but they are light ! I'll get an AUW with those in. should get around 1,200 watts ...

I have to finish some detail on the cowl (I have to craft that inner lip of the cowl), mount the canopy, paint and fasten the gear legs, mount the cowl, and mock up a battery tray.

sounds like your pretty close !

take care :)
