View Full Version : Alfa Aileron Linkage Problems

I know this is a well-known problem - but I just came across the issue of the linkage coming loose in my P-47.
What are you guys doing to fix this problem, both before and after you install the servo in the wing? I just put some 5-minute epoxy where the linkage tube comes out of the wing, and tried to get some on the inner part as well, but didn't want to epoxy the control wires themselves.
If anybody has some advice, and some pictures, that would be great!

BTW, I really hope this Electric Warbird thread starts taking off, considering it's basically all I fly!!! Lets keep it going guys! ;)

Sounds like you fixed it the same way I did Nate.....only had issues with the right one. :)

Had to epoxy the tube a bit inside as well...

Early on I saw the need to glue down the control wire tubing in the wings of the Alfa birds. I stick a small wedge of balsa in the wing and push it into the wing bout 2" and epoxy down the tube for at least 4" in the wing, I just add some fibre glass filling to the epoxy and let it run down and over to capture the tubing, it will stay there, 5 minute epoxy works fine. I glue down the exit port on the wing. My Ailerons and Elevator are play free and Johnny on the spot.

[B][I]I did the same thing on my Alpha Corsair before I ever flew it. I epoxied the inner end of both aileron nyrods to the inside top of the wing and put a drop of epoxy where the aileron nyrod exits the bottom of the wing. I also made a balsa stand off for the elevator nyrod to hold it in line with the servo arm and epoxied it it place and using an ice cream stick to reach farther back in the fuselage, I epoxied the elevator nyrod to the side of the aircraft at the cockpit area. No slop in my flight controls and with the blue Jet Outrunner motor on 3 cell 1320 lipos the little Corsair tracks like it's on rails. Best bang for the buck I've had from an airplane in a long time.

Last week I dorked mine fully inverted in to heavy to fly winds.

*sigh* It was my daughters birthday, and she begged me to go inverted, so I made her hold the carnage.

I lost my Alpha Corsair yesterday, flying formation with my buddy and his P-51. We pulled up into an emmelman and he drifted over into my Corsair with his prop catching my right horizontal stab and working it's way up to the back of my wing, cutting the fuselage in half. He was fortunate enough to bank right and keep flying, returning with a nice landing and no damage. My Corsair was earth bound like a home sick ground hog. Even bent the motor mount.
Couldn't stand being without my little electric warbird, so today I order two more from Hobby Lobby... one Corsair and one Nakijima Ki, with blue Jet Outrunner motors. Should be here Monday. Does anybody have any experience with the Nakijima Alph model? I've been told it's the fastest of the Alpha fleet.

I can see an F-86 in my electric stable in the near future.

I bought one from a fellow EZoner but the USPS completly smashed it in transit. If your looking for spirited flight the MPJet in Blue is fine. But either the Red or an axie 2212/20 will really get you moving.

Just my 2 cents

Just received my Alfa Marie, what a beaut.

I've read the Alfa instructions a couple of times and have scanned through them several more. I'm reading through the forums as always, to help clarify some of Alfa's not-so-clear instructions and to pick up on any tips before moving on. One issue awaiting me I understand, is the slippage of the aileron pushrods in the servo arm swivel connector. The fix for this seems a little odd - shrink tubing!? I would think that the use of shrink tubing would be unpredictably temporary, at best a band-aid that's apt to fail at an inconvenient time. I'm thinking that a small diameter aluminum tube may work better, I will post pictures later on should the alum tube prove out.

I'm using the recommended Red MPJ 20203 Outrunner to power the Marie. From the initial test fitting there appears to be a clearence issue with the cowling. It appears that for the cowling to fit in place properly, the mount will have to be turned around and mounted backwards, with the tang or flange protruding in through the firewall, with the flange pointing forward the front motor housing hits the inside of the cowl. There are any number of ways to attach the motor mount I'm sure, has anyone found what they feel is the best way for mounting the Red MPJ 20203 Outrunner.

If anyone would care to summarize or elaborate on the issues surrounding building the Alfa Mustang, it would be immensely helpful, mucho thanks.

8VSB,
You already figured out how to do it. You may have to enlarge the whole in the firewall to accomidate the flange on the mount, but it is easy to do. I mounted all my red outrunners in my Alfa's by doing it this way. Good Luck and HAPPY FLYING!!!
