I got a pretty good deal on a used MVVS .40.

The owner was selling it for a very reasonable price, he threw the tuned pipe (#3248) in for nothing...(although he admitted that the pipe had a rattle inside).

Since I was getting a good deal, I'm not complaining.
The engine is in fine shape, very clean, no apparent damage and very nice compression.
But I'd like to know if the pipe can be repaired.

There is indeed a rattle in the pipe...there is a length of about a .5 " daimeter aluminum pipe that is loose inside the tuned pipe...it is almost as long as the inside of the muffler/pipe itself.

I can't figure out how it was attached...or whether it sheared off of anything.

Is there a way to catch the pipe back onto a new sleeve of narrower or wider pipe - and set it, or is there no alternative but to hack saw the thing ...or trash it?

This is presumably one of the (so called) quiet pipes. They have an internal pipe that is supposed to be fixed at one end (the stinger end as I recall) and braced against the pipe walls at the other. The only way to fix it will be to cut open the pipe, reattach the internal pipe and reweld the outside.

With the internal pipe floating around, it is unlikely to make any difference to the power you can get out of it but it will be noisier than if the internal pipe is properly attached.
