I like electic warbirds. In fact, I just started flying a mini funtana, and I dont like it compared to even gws warbirds stuff... I always wanted to be a fighter jock, not an experimental aerobatics pilot....

People do like electric warbirds.
They are already being widely discussed in the following forums
Scale Modelling
Electric Talk
Parkflyers
Sports Models
Jets- Electric Ducted Fans
Jets- Pushers
Foamies
GWS Forum
To name but eight.
They are not being widely discussed in this new forum.

Just found this thread and just started in electric airplanes. I ordered my first electric airplane last Friday, an Alpha Models Corsair. I've been flying large scale warbirds for the last 14 years and wanted something a little simplier to have fun with near the house. Today, a friend of mine and I put the maiden flight on his Alpha Corsair with the MP jet red outrunner motor and what a blast that was to fly. Unlimited performance and definitly not your average park flyer. I can't wait to get mine and an already looking to see what I will buy next.
This is a shot of my big 1/5 scale Corsair on a flyby at Hodges Hobbies Warbirds Over Georgia, last year. Plane is 38 pounds and powered by a 5.2 cu. in Sach/Dolmar gasoline engine.
I'm just looking to have fun with something a little simpler. ;)

A few more hours to run the antenna and aileron pushrods, but here's a Great Planes Combat Corsair, converted to electric, with a (Mark Rittinger approved) Magnetic Mayhem and a Master Airscrew 3.5:1 gearbox. It's the initiation to a P-40 of similar size.
In the distant past I've had gas Warbirds, but wanting to put some detail on them, then covering them with oil, was disgruntling at best. Electric allows the detail, and a smooth cowling. Wouldn't have anything but. :)

Unfortunately, Kyosho has decided not to make the MM any more, so snap up what you find.
Hobbypeople has Multiplex BL480-4G 4.4:1 setup for $89.00, a GREAT deal, and the power is really something. My fw190A8 goes straight up with it on a 3s1p Tanic 2450 lipo, and at 37 ounces.
Hows the P40 coming?

DougC, I've been into scale warbirds for about 13 years now, most of them 1/5 scale or larger. They make a nice big canvas that you can work your magic on and the engine can be enclosed completely on most of them. I was just looking for something, not necessarilly accurately scaled, but something with a little detail and simpler and quicker to get into the air. Not to mention the cost difference. When you lose a 1/5th scaled out warbird, it's like losing member of the family. I purchased an Alpha Corsair at $119.00. When you lose one of those, you just order another one and can have a flying replacement in a week. These little electrics are just fun and convenient. Throw one in the back of your truck and you're always ready to fly, anytime.......anywhere!

Nice Top Flite Corsair, very well done. I like the squadron and airplane you chose, too. Tom Blackburn's, Big Hog from VF 17, the "Jolly Rogers". My Corsair duplicates Blackburn's executive officer, Roger Hedrick, plane #17, same squadron.

I can't wait to get into more electric warbird flying! I have a P-51D right now by PZ that will surely be upgraded shortly, but for now, it flies great, looks scale in the sky, and with my busy schedule (full-time Dad, college student, and neighborhood taxi driver), I like the fact I didn't have to spend 4 months building it (although I've built my fair share in the past).

Warbirds and big guns,,,, what could be better,,,,
I am flying a GWS Corsair (along with a few thousand other people) and really enjoy it,,,, Some modifications really make it a lot more fun,,,,
Brushless motor,,, and you don't have to put a fire breathing amp sucker in it to have fun,,, I am running a Park 370-5400kv motor on a 5.33 gear with a APC 10x7E prop,,,, on TWO 1320TP CELLS,,,, it is about 25-30% better than the stock 350,,, it is not a rocket but it is a lot better than stock,,, 2 cells cost a lot less than 3,,, and the weight is less too,,,, I am pulling about 11 amps without fear of anything burning up,,,, I do fly it wide open most of the time and get about 5 minutes of aerobatic flight and 3 minutes of cruise.
Ailerons and rolls,,, with the ailerons set up with equal up and down deflection you need to be pretty good with rudder and elevator to make nice rolls,,, Differential is needed,,,, I set mine up with about twice as much down aileron as up,,,, and it rolls really nice without touching the rudder or elevator and it has some barrel just like a full size Corsair,,, I have a servo in each wing and made the change by positioning the control horn on the sevo so that it is angled back,,, If you have a computer radio you can program in the differential,,,,

Ugh, with the lack of response, and everyone still posting in the Parkflyer forum on Warbirds, I don't see this trial forum lasting.
To bad, I'm just getting into the warbird thing, and the Parkflyer forum is so saturated with other threads.

Radio Bum, try doing just the opposite with your ailerons. Have them go up more than they go down. It is usually what we do on the bigger 1/5 scale models and it reduces the tendency to tip stall. A down aileron produces more drag and will make the tip stall on the side of the down aileron. Better to have more up than down on both ailerons.
I do hope the Warbird Thread survives. It is basically all I fly. Trying to figure out which Alpha Warbird I will buy next. Thinking about the Japanese Nakagemi Frank.

I just found this thread when I was looking at the RC Combat forum. We have been building WWII E-Warbirds for Combat for several months and held the first contest with them in May. Details and photos of the planes can be found on www.georgiacombat.com in the "Dixie Nationals" Report.
Here are some of my planes, some of Lee Liddles and some of Mike Fredricks WWII e-Fighters:

Fighterpilot,,,
I know it sounds strange,,,,,but I set it up first with equal aileron deflection and then went with more up then down and the snake roll got worse,,,, went the other way and it straightened up,,,,, I scratched my head and finally came to the following conclusion,,,,
The GWS Corsair needs more drag on the side with the down aileron,,, if not it starts a yaw induced turn,,,, Now if I had a rudder, which I don't, you could hold a small amount of opposite rudder to stop the yaw,,,,
Oh,,, you could not snap roll this plane if you wanted too,,, Believe me I have tried,,,, with little yaw from the ailerons it just rolls,,,, you have to introduce yaw to get a snap roll,,, full up elevator with full rudder is how you get a snap roll,,,,
And if somebody says GWS fighter and tip stall again I'll BARF,,,, dropping a wing during a straight on stall is not a tip stall,,,,, doing a turn and the the inboard wing tip stalling due to relative speed difference and angle of attack is a tip stall. Which of course puts you into an ugly stall /spin situation,,,,

I for one love E warbirds. I'm just not a big fan of the GWS warbirds. I have two of the old Seriously Fun Models Warbirds (which are pink foam, glassed and painted) that I love.
I've moved on to bigger E warbirds now :)

This is just the forum I was looking for!
I found some great info in the electric scale modeling forum with builds on HOB and Ron Daniels war birds, but it is great to have a thread on just E powered war birds. I have been searching for built up warbirds in the 600 or 05 size class and it seems to be limited. The new GP combat planes like the Corsair in this thread and the larger scale Ron Daniels kits 1/10.8 are great ideas for a line of possible ARFs and kits in the 3 to 4 lb size in a variety from Yak to Mitsubishi to Hawker which can be powered by less expensive brush motors or moderate size brushless, and can accommodate mechanical retracts. Now if I new some venture capitalists with RC addiction .

I'd like to see an electric warbirds forum!!!
There's one in the "fuel" forum, why not in the "electric" as well?
Being a scale modeller with nowhere near as much interest in non-warbirds as I have for WWII warbirds, seeing a forum dedicated strictly to electric warbirds would be great.
There are so many build, and flying, problems that are unique to warbirds...i.e. - low wing, gull-wing, power and scale vs. weight problems (with the inherent retracts, four blade prop setups, etc.) that a forum just for e-warbirds would be a great place to share knowledge without having to sift through too many non-warbird threads (as great as they are).

I hardly think that two weeks is enough time to really consider the amount of interest. I don't know about others, but I tend to browse only those forums that are of interest to me, and it might be a while before I even notice a new forum.

Hey Guys; Anybody know who might make a kit or an ARF of a P40 warhawk in the 50 in WS,3lb range? I would prefer a balsa build over foam. Been lookin' for a long time and have'nt been able to find one.
If I can't find one the next option would be to convert a 40 size to elec. Anybody have any suggestions?

Hi to everyone.
Just getting addicted in Electric RC warbirds. And this new passion brought me a passion for these planes in their real 1:1 counterpart, too.
Here in Italy, De Agostini (an editor) just started publishing a WONDERFUL series of DIE-CAST 1:72 warbirds and selling them once every two weeks together with a short story about the plane and its pilots.
Check here: http://www.deagostiniedicola.it/collezioni/aerei/collezione.html
Sorry guys, but the site is in Italian. You cannot see the level of details of these small static models, but believe me they are great ! Every panel line is outlined, the decals are painted and not applied, and you can decide whether exposing it with open or retracted landing gear...and it is full metal with spinning prop and plastic wheels, antennas and guns. They are already painted and finished.
I actually own a couple of Alfa's, a Nakajima Hayate (which flies very well and fast), and a BF-109, which still lies in its box with decals on, ready for when my Hayate will become packaging chips... But I am really in love with every Alfa Model and Flying Styro I see around...foam warbirds dependent ?? ;-)
Regards from Italy !

Has any one seen or built the new Bearcat from Thunder Tiger? It comes as the Rare Bear, but it could be painted blue and stars and bars added. Wing span is 34" and it is a foamy. The canopy is a little small for an F8F, but in the air, I don't think it is noticable.

Mark I am a scale modeller as well, and while this is only my second season flying RC, I can see warbirds as being my primary area of interest. To me there is nothing more cool than seeing a scale model fly.
Here are some pics of my first experiment of "cross-pollenating" my equipment and techniques from scale modelling to RC builds - my GWS P-51. I just painted it over the weekend, and will probably maiden it next weekend. Although I am pretty happy with it, I think next time I will try glassing one first. The only sticker from the kit I used was the checkerboard for the nose cowl. I wasn't too happy about it, but I did not feel up to masking and painting the checkerboard by hand (anyone have any techniques for this?). I did airbrush a flat clear on it to reduce the glossy shine.
Scott
P.S. - NC EF stands for North Coast Electric Flyers, which is the group that I fly with here in Cleveland. We have a pretty active forum in the Groups section. There are quite a few warbirds, including some glassed Corsairs.

I agree - being a relative new comer (3 months now) to the R/C hobby my initial goal was to gain enough experience to be able to successfully fly a P-51... From slow stick to Cessna 182 to several Formosa's (used them as test beds to see if I had the skills to keep a low wing plane in the air) I've learned a lot and have flown almost every morning that the weather here has allowed...
Two weeks ago I finished and successfully maidened a GWS P-51D. Three good days of flying then a combination of a small radio glitch and misjudging how close I was to a 6' berm at the far end of the field I fly at turned that model into large chucks of styrofoam all the way back to the wing. All the electronics survived as did the brushless motor...
...back to the hobby store I went to get a slope glider kit. It's been dorked now as well but was repairable and still flys well. I just finished building a GWS Spitfire and have a GWS ME-109 waiting in the wings.
While I've enjoyed all of the planes I've flown none quite compare to being at the sticks of a WW-II warbird for me....
As far as fiberglassing goes, I'd like to try that technique with the ME-109. Anyone have any good links which will put me on the right track for accomplishing it right the first time?
Thanks!

Hi Ronin,
Here is a thread that I intend to use for my first glassing project:
GWS Spitfire Glassing Thread (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=371359)
Also, if the hobby shop doesn't carry the slope version you are looking for - go to the sponsors page and try GWS-Online. The hobby shop in my area does not carry many of the slope versions, so I bought my P-51 at this site.
