View Full Version : Anyone heard of a "Short Stuff", will Twin Speed 400's work?

This is a fiberglass V-hull 18" long and made by Dumas. It's an old kit that a buddy gave me when he moved. He started to mount twin S400's in it.
Will this work, or should I go with twin 480's? What hardware would I use such as prop size for either the 400's or the 480's? I have 10-CP1700 packs and 7 and 8-2400SCR's. I'd lke to build a real rocket if that's possible!

480 will be better - the Dumas hulls are rather heavy so torque is good
with those motors grab two sets of 6% silver brushes and put another 45 degrees into the psrings to increase tension
sand the brushes to shape.
if you are figuring on counter rotating motors the BB might be better and you can use Octuras X430 and X430R it should be pretty zippy but
the 7 or 8 cell 2400's with the motors in parallel should be fine use a controller of at least 40 amps - need to keep rpm up
I would like to heaar how this goes it should be a hoot.

This is my 1st foray into boats, thanks for the advice Andrew. Which 480's would you use? Also what hardware would you recommend to get the power to the prop. I've seen the long springs that look like speedometer cable, long straight shafts, and something that looks like an outdrive. There are no plans to race it (well, not at this time anyway ;) ), I just want it to be as fast as possible.

i have one of those too, they are heavy and designed for gas. Mine was set up with an 05 can motor, straight shaft/subsurface drive, make your own from 1/8 music wire and brass tubing for a stuffing box. use the dog bone universal from dumas, made my own rudder from 1/8" brass rod and brass sheeting, i silver solder it, all parts are available from dumas. I hung the rudder off the transom with parts taken from an r/c airplane steerable landing gear. use two of the nylon blocks and the steering arm. I placed the motor as far forward as possible, I used 1400mah 7.2 nicads, a standard size radio gear, w/ AA batts, i used a 3 postion switch from radio shack, which gave full fwd/neut/rev, i added trim tabs made from a cassette box, they where 2.5 " wide and about 3/4" long. i used a the 049 and 09 nylon dumas prop, i also used some octuras, which where faster, i'd etimate top speed in the 10-12 mph. run time was 4-5 min. at full. i first had a rs 380/speed 400 and it wasn't enought.

I suggest, twin 1414 2y's running on at least 28 cells, using a sub-sub surface drive turning twin counter rotating, Octura, "Speed Freak" props. This should cause it to actually fly, which is what you're after any how.
Do you think it will haul the Plett around? Maybe that on 30 cells or so.
Come get your stinkin hydro hull!!:)---Rob

Gee Rob, That's a really neat idea! However, I don't think I could get the 28 cells inside this little thing and if I did it wouldn't float anymore, at rest I mean.

I'll be there this weekend. Make sure you have a Mt. Dew on ice waiting for me, maybe even a 6-pack! :D
