Morning all!

Does anyone know where I might be able to obtain a small stepping motor in the UK? I'm after something as small as possible, as it will only need to drive a pointer in a fashion similar to a rev counter on a car. i would prefer to keep it direct drive, so the resolution (steps per rev) need to be quite good, say 1.8 degree or less?

I've found a few larger motors, but i want to try and keep the weight down as much as possible.

if anyone has any leads, I would love to hear them!

many thanks in advance
Andy

The smallest steppers I've found are in old 3.5 or 5.5 inch floppy disk drives. They drive the heads via a lead screw. Bit tricky because they have one bearing built into the lead screw frame, but could be modified I think.

Cheers for that link Zlatko, it looks almost perfect for what I need! I'm not sure how rugged it is, but it's worthy of further investigation.

I've had another thought too, in that I could use a modified servo instead of a stepper motor. The only problem would be upping the rotation. I need around 300 degrees of movement, whereas all the servos I know are limitied to about 150 degrees...

Cheers

I made a rev counter for my car a few years back and used a micro servo with 1:2 gearing to drive the pointer. I used gears from another servo as the source for these.
It gave very snappy response to the throttle.
