My tailplane has been damaged its an irvine tutor trainer and the leading edge of the tailplane's covering has been burst and the part that runs the length of the tailplane has a crack in it not completely broken but is broken.

So how do I go about fixing it I think some fibre glass patches is the way to go.

I have attached two pictures

It's not much. Just run some thin cyano over the broken area while holding it straight and level. Then just recover the area. The cyano repair will be stronger than the original balsa so no bracing is required.

From what we can see in those pictures, I would do exactly what DaveSawers has suggested.

If you're not experienced in covering using an iron and heat gun, you can repair the covering damage using Solartrim, which is sticky-backed and is normally used for applying patterns on a background film. Alternatively, the damaged area looks small enough that you could simply use sticky tape (Sellotape, Scotch tape, etc.).

The main thing with tailplane repairs, is don't add any unnecessary weight. Don't put extra bits of balsa 'just in case' -- the thin cyano is all you need.
