Does anyone know of a schematic/component that could be used to keep a plane on a particular heading ?
I'm not thinking of anything as fancy as a GPS - more just to keep the plane headed in the direction it was going when you "flip the switch".
I know the FMS co-pilot would probably do this but I was wondering if there was a DIY way.
Thanks,

The FMS Co-Pilot will not do this. A heading-hold gyro (a model helicopter accessory) will do this if the rudder only affects the yaw axis, else you need to augment it with attitude stabilisation (fmacp).
Ram.
edit: it is one thing to "stay on this heading", but that wont get you to where you were initialy going, because side-to-side motions of the aircraft (crosswind translation).

I guess I was more thinking of keeping it on a compass heading rather than just flying in a straight line.
But then theres still the problem of cross-winds.
Ah well - another idea crushed lol ;)
