I had a great time flying with you guys yesterday. We need to lobby for some more parking at the Aerodrome.
Looks like winds were at worst 7 sustained with max gust of 11. That made things a little more interesting.
For those who don't know, we can get a pretty good weather nowcast from
http://www.ghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/wxstn/ This is from the NASA Global Hydrology Center on Bradford across from UAH. Forecast conditions are at
http://usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?sta=KHSV&model=avn&state=AL&Submit=Get+Forecast although they kind of blew it yesterday with forecast of around 2 mph all afternoon.
I'm looking forward to doing it again. Maybe some of the new guys will have new planes to show off next time.

I stopped by the RP AD around 5:30. The winds were pretty bad, as expected, so I did not fly. Maybe things will calm down next week.
Question: Where did Frank and sons get their Slow-Sticks? Not including the radio, how much was it? Do you buy the motor and batteries separate?
Question: I am looking to get a decent, but not expensive radio. Maybe a 4-channel for now. I am going to start out with an analog one. Any advice on brands or models?
Question: Does anyone have suggestions about which magazines are best to suscribe to?

SlowSticks can be purchased at either RC Hobbies or Hobbytown. $35 for the plane including the stock brushed motor. Batteries are purchased separately. Dad has actually flown his AB batteries on his SS.
If you want to get a real radio, I'd suggest a computer radio. It has numerous advantages like multiple model memories, digital trims, and some other cool features like exponential (makes it easier to fly smoother) and dual rates. Me and the rest of the Groses started with Hitec Flash5's. We like them and they have served us well so far. Check out www.servocity.com (where we got ours). Holler if you have other questions about this.
Magazines are a toss-up. Backyard Flyer has a lot of beginner info. It is geared toward electric parkflyers. FlyRC has both e-flight and glow. Pretty nice magazine I think. Model Airplane News is good too. I like the tech tips and such in them all.

If you want an inexpensive radio, search around on ebay. You can get a better radio for less there, it will be used most likely, but once you learn a bit more you WILL want a more advanced radio. And if you fly more than one plane, you WILL want one with model memory.
Just advice..... :)

MB,
I agree with Gary, don't get any less radio than the Flash 5. I have a Flash 4 which is no longer available and I wish I had spent the extra bucks on the 5. I do have 5 memories, expo, etc. but I don't have dual rates and I really wish I did. I'd also like more model memories since I have 5 planes and just got the Aerofly Pro Deluxe flight simulator which uses the radio as the input device. I've been looking at the Hitec Optic 6 which had some software bugs initially but seem to be OK now. The Flash 5 will take care of you for years. It comes with a NiCd pack and charger but you can get a AA battery holder at Radio Shack and put in some NiMH batteries which are easier to manage than NiCds. If you get an analog radio and a add another plane later, you'll have to fiddle with the servo reversing and trim each time you switch planes. It sure is nice to have all that remembered in the radio.
I think the Slow Stick is available with both the GWS 400 or 300 motor. I replaced the stock 300 with a 400 in mine and it climbs like crazy. It handles camera payloads a lot better with the bigger motor too.
For the receiver and servos you can get those in a package deal with the transmitter. The Hitec 555 or Electron 6 with either the HS-81 or smaller HS-55s work fine in the Slow Stick. You'll need a speed controller too. I used a GWS 400 which is still ticking. The smaller ones are supposed to work but some of the guys have had them burnout prematurely.
Here is a link to a spreadsheet I put together showing channels usage in our area. http://www.knology.net/~suggs/planes/72MHz_freq.xls
Avoid the channels listed close to pager transmitters which share the band with us. I've also indicated the channels used by me and the Grose boys (23,27,31, and 58). I believe that Miderror is using 45 and 56 which I need to add to my list. The other stuff in the spreadsheet is information I noted when I did a frequency survey with a receiver I have at home. I was picking up a lot of weak stuff from the TV cable in my house. When you order the radio you can specify the frequency (if they have it in stock). You can't easily change your transmitter frequency but can buy the appropriate crystal for the receiver.
That should be all you need.
I use 6 and 7 cell Firebird/Aerobird batteries on my Slow Stick with great results. I used the HobbyZone peak charger for nearly a year until I started flying some 8 cell planes and needed a different charger. I also have some 7 and 8 cell packs from www.cheapbatterypacks.com . They are a good deal and can be ordered in any configuration, with any wire and connector you like. I finally standardized on the Dean's Ultra connector because I had some intermittent issues with the Mini-Tamiya used by HobbyZone.
I have read a lot of issues of BackYard Flyer and Quiet Flyer magazines but only subscribe to FlyRC now. It does cover some gas planes but is so much higher in quality than the others. IMHO none of the mags give an honest review of new planes and hardware. They would be driving off advertisers if they did. You have to read the forums to find out the real story on plane performance. Compared to my amateur radio and astronomy magazines the airplane magazines are pretty bad. They are generally poorly written and typos are frequent. But I love 'em anyway.

David Ewing 44
David Leviner 47
Brent Priddy 48
Chris Cantrell 56 and 60

Looks like there might be a conflict with 56...do you guys usually fly off of Moquin Drive...if so, then we might never see any problems.
The main frequency problem I see is when we get a couple more people flying Aerobirds and there's only 6 channels to choose from. There's a lot better chance this frequency issue will arise with them.
None the less, that's why we started this thread...maybe all those guys you listed will join it and we can have some good flying together! :)

Moquin is the only place we've all flown together. The Aerobird-Adtran brothers have flown over by the lake close to Old Madison Pike mostly (I think). We usually pull off of Moquin at the first little break in the curb on the North side of the road. The other night we had 8 cars there!

Hi Gang,
i'm the oldest of Frank Grose's son, i live in Jasper TN and work in Chattanooga. I too have a collection of planes including the Aerobird &
SlowStick. My AB is Ch2 and my 72mhz radio is Ch29.
While building my 2nd wing for my Slow Stick (long story with a slight twist) i used 1/8" carbon tubes for both LE & TE. then for the dihedral supports i used brass tubing instead of the stock aluminum. this mod really stiffened the wing and loops and other high g manuvers do not affect the wing. besides the carbon tube takes strikes from foreign objects much better than the stock fiberglass/bamboo sticks.
Rob i'm happy to report i do not have any RFI with my 72mhz slowstick and the power lines that cross my property. i did several range checks from 25-200 feet before i launched for the first time. wow it sure is cool to walk out your back door and fly !!!

Brian,
It is great that you can fly in your own backyard. I'm glad to hear you don't have any interference. Have fun!
I tried a quick Slow Stick flight Friday around 6. The wind dropped momentarily but by the time I got to the Aerodrome it had picked up again. I took off and bounced around for a few minutes then did a nice vertical landing - and counted myself lucky to make it with no damage. I was too busy with other things to take advantage of the nice air on Saturday. I hope y'all got to fly.

Does anyone else have an opinion of the Hitec Optic 6. I would prefer to get a radio that you can change the crystal out easily. Not sure if this is possible with the Optic 6. Or should I not be concerned with this feature. I'm not certain of price ranges but I might want to spend a little more if the additional features would be worth it. Any opinions or should I just stick with the Flash 5?

All I know about the Optic 6 is what I have read in the magazines and on the forums. The frequency can be changed unlike most of our radios. You can purchase a synthesizer module that lets you change it anytime. You can also purchase different crystal modules but I think a couple of crystal modules costs the same as the synthesizer. There were apparently some software bugs in early versions (do a search on the forum for details) but those seem to have been fixed. I was considering the Optic 6 because I have a Flash 4 which lacks several features of the 5. And I could use more model memories. Frequency agility would be very useful at a busy club field. Conflicts depend on how many people will be flying at once. You'd also have to change your receiver crystal, which is very easy if it's not buried in a fuselage.
Ham radios have used synthesizers since the 70's. I'm not sure why it took so long to get them into widespread use in RC equipment. Spread spectrum equipment is catching on in the RC car community. Maybe it won't be long until we have it in aircraft which will make all these problems pretty much go away.

ghee-grose,
I believe you were the one flying the yellow Piper the other day at RP. At least I think it was a Piper. What is the exact model/manuf of that plane. How difficult is it to fly? I figure I will get a slow stick next but I really liked the way that plane flew. I think you said you upgraded the motor as well. ???
ghee-grose
May 24, 2005, 05:41 PM
The plane is a MultiPlex Pico Cub. You can view the details on Tower Hobbies at this link... http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEXU6&P=7
The motor I have on it is a BP-12 brushless outrunner from Balsa Products... http://www.balsapr.com/catalog/motors/BPBrushlessView.asp?ProductId=U635171
This is an awesome combination! Throw a nice 3-cell Lipo battery in there and you will have one sweet flying plane...and don't listen to Tower's weight specs on that plane cause when you do it this way it will be under 15oz. :)
UAGrad2001
May 24, 2005, 06:37 PM
Thanks,
Any suggestions on the skill level required before purchasing the Pico Cub? I currently have the challenger and want to eventually get something more advanced.
ghee-grose
May 24, 2005, 11:24 PM
You want my suggestion...here it goes :)
1. Get you a nice radio like a Flash-5 and a complete flight package (receiver, servos, ESC, and battery)
2. Buy a GWS SlowStick ($35) and get good with it. It has the exact same controls and flight characteristics as the Cub AND it's a hundred times more durable!
3. After you've mastered the SlowStick, get you a Cub (Multiplex or GWS) and you will have a much longer life out of it. It's not as forgiving as the SS, but your skills will be a little more adjusted by then. Then all the fun comes!!!
Bottom line....
SlowStick is a MUST for everybody! It's simple, durable, yet very versatile and an excellent flier.
The Cub is a great looking plane along with a very stable "floater"...but has a rather fragile foam fuselage.
***Hope this helps you***

I got a fire resistant cash box at Wal Mart to keep and transport my LiPos in. I stuck some velcro to the bottom and attach the batts there to keep them from rattling around. I charge them in that with the charger wire running under the lid. I don't leave it in the car. It looks a little funny taking in to work but I don't want to subject them to the heat. DL, there's not a whole lot of grass there, maybe 30ft from curb to cotton field. I land my Aerobird on the grass with no gear. SlowSticks can land anywhere easily. The road is fun, but there is the occasional car and biker gang.
when it comes to buying lipos, you have to know what kind of amp draw your motor is going to pull. Then you can match that with a lipo pack that can provide that kind of discharge rate. My guess is that any brand these days is good, but I have heard some negative things recently about the newest Thunder Power packs. Kokams are popular and not too expensive.

Looks like they site is deciding what size picture to show. Posted three different sizes and they all came out small. Looks like you must double click on each photo to see a LARGER size. These areial shots don't show much as a thumb nail post. :D
You all have a good day

"AdTran has a nice pond, that would be great for Float Planes, but guess you'd have to work there for access"
Actually, there are several father/son outings to the pond that we see there on some days during the summer months while working that have electric boats out on the water. Nobody really says anything to them. Its a "badgeless" access environment on the campus per Mark Smith. So I would think that flying on floats (at least on weekends to minimize any possible injury to bystanders) would be fine.
Access to the water is easy, just park in any of the parking lots/deck and walk right up.

I must have missed ya'll...I had to swing by RC Hobbies after lunch and spent a little too much time there (as usual). Notice I said too much TIME, not MONEY!!! :)
I don't know if I can wait until 5:00 to fly this evening, it's Friday and I ain't staying late. I will probably stop there on the way home around 3:00 or so. Might be a solo flight?

Stopped by RP on the way home and Rob was there.

Burned off a quick fly with a wing and chatted with Rob a bit before heading out.
Seems we all are doing a bit of flying, just not at the same time.
Have to work on that.

I flew my Cub last night and had an "out of fuselage" experience...at least the wing was out of the fuselage! :o I was buzzing the camera for some cool shots and got a little close to a cedar tree so I gave her full throttle and jerked back on the stick and POP, off came the wing and the fuselage kept on climbing for a little bit until it came to rest in the tree. The wing fluttered down to a soft landing and the fuselage didn't have any damage either. Lucky me! :D

You were lucky, The only time I've had a wing problem (folded in flight at over the Tennessee River in Knoxville) I watched my plane float lazily down the river. A boat finally came by and ran WAY down the river and found it. It was Total Loss.
Its a good story when you can fly it again.

Michael and I flew today (Thursday) at about 6:00 after the storms passed. It actually turned out nicely with a very slight breeze. We chose not to install the SCMs on our ABCs because the fields were so muddy. Neither one of us wanted to walk out in the middle of a red clay field to retrieve a plane.

One of us might be flying. I'll send out an email this morning and ask some of the guys here at Adtran.
If anyone is over lunch today between 11:30 and 12:30 let me know, I'd like to go out and watch.

The Multiplex Cub

Rick can set you up with both of these and you won't have to pay shipping. I think he's gonna get pretty close to the price on that cub too...

Here's a heads-up to all you RP flyers...
Tomorrow (Saturday, June 4) the North Alabama Silent Fliers (NASF) will be meeting out at Sharon Johnston Park. That is way up on Winchester Road NE of H'ville. We're a group of guys who fly gliders/sailplanes of all types...big and small, new and old. We always have lots of fun and encourage anybody to stop by and get bit by the soaring bug. Flying will start around 11am or so. I'll be there with my big Oly 99 (see my avatar). Ya'll come check us out!
