I'm building a F3B-style winch to try out some ideas I have on the one-way brake. The motor is a Bosch 1.5KW starter from a BMW. I've got the motor converted to ball bearings on both ends, and the motor runs strong and smooth.

I haven't had any experience with F3B, so I need to know what size I should make the drum. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Hollenbeck (german) F3B winch from which I can take some measurements tonight.

Depending on the length of the drum, wind and the line, anywhere from 1.6" to 2.25".
There are F3b fliers in the Atlanta area, look for Tim Foster and his crew. You can see picks of quite a few winches at my website:

The latest winches we've built here are 12" long drums with a base diameter of 1.6 and clamshells for 2.0. This seems to be following the latest in current Euro trends.

"Normal" usage is 1.15 line and a 2.0".

Here's a site with info/links to lots of F3B winches. Should be useful with a bit of reading.
