See that Mat Chapman has arrived with the full scale Cap, If nothing else it is worth the trip to see him do his stuff. He will make the hair on your neck stand up.

Cool, the first pic in post 20, not sure of the plane name. I have seen the scale model in person, and the owner of the real plane it's based off of lives at the local airport. It's re-created right down to the crack in the windshield. Lots of hours spent at the real airplane with a camera, tape measure, and notebook. Very great attention to detail.

Yep, that's it, a Champ. For some reason that name was eluding me last night.

It has some great detail work, my hat is off to the scratch builder.

Actually from the pictures I've seen only one of the Pitts M12's have been the Comp ARF. It is the one that looks the least scale IMO. The Comp ARF is the one in the red Oracle scheme. The other four are Bigairplanes.com 35% and 41% kits. They are designed by Bob Trueworthy. They are all awsome looking models I just think the bigairplanes look a little more scale. One of the first pics shows the Comp ARF red Oracle sitting next to Bob's 41% and you can see some of the differences. Earl

Glenn,

Is that Dick Konkle's airplane? I used to fly with him years ago when I lived in GA, and he had an Emeraude(sp?) then...exceptional builder and flyer, and a real nice guy as well. Pic only shows his back, so I couldnt tell if that was him or not.

That Taylorcraft is beautiful as well. I think I remember reading before that the plane is nicely overpowered. That knife edge pass looks like good evidence that it might be.

David, not sure if that is his name or not. I met him a couple of times at my friends house (his father owns the full size Champ the model is built after). I will ask him when I see him and let you know.

Thanks

Truss, do you remember where you read about the Tcraft? I'm searching for more information on it, but haven't found anything.

Thanks.

That's a Champ for sure! Aeronca Champ 7AC to be exact. :) My Dad used to own one of these birds for several years. What a nice Saturday afternoon flyer. I think we saw the same RC plane as posted above at the Big Bird Fly-In in Huntsville Alabama a couple years ago. Here's some pics from then. By the way...seeing this plane was worth the whole weekend to my Dad!

Thanks for the pictures of the Aeronca. My father worked at Aeronca Manufacturing in the late 50s. I believe they had quit manufacturing complete aircraft at that time, not sure. Anyway they had a story about the Champ and how easy they were to fly. The story (not true) is a owner had his started up and full of gas. He was outside of the cabin and the aircraft took off by itself. When it ran out of gas it landed in a farmers field. The farmer found the owners phone number on some paperwork in the plane and give the guy a call. The owner asked him to turn it around, gas it up, start it and it would fly back to his airfield. NOW THAT IS A GOOD FLYER!

A non-piloted Champ departed Walkill Airport in Walkill, NY and landed in the Meadowlands outside of Seacaucus, NJ. Time approximate - 20 years ago. Story could probably be found in the archives of the Hackensack Record.

I have a newspaper article here November 1997, unfortunately my scanner is borked. Grime Field airport Urbana, Paul Sirks' Champ flew off for 2 hours without him, but unfortunately was badly damaged after 2hrs and 90 miles of free flight. :( Definitely would have reached the fly-off in a scale comp.

Glenn,

That is Dick's Champ...I found a scale masters or top gun article the other day with a pic in it, and its the same plane. He's a fantastic builder and detailer, and the way he flies stuff makes it look so real...very neat to watch. Doubt he would remember me, I was just a teenager when I used to fly with him at the site off of Fulton Industrial blvd, way back in the late 80's.

Cool, I saved some of the pics off the webb. I hope to see my bud and his dad in the next couple of weeks. I want to get a pic of the real plane and the scale model together.

His dad flys the real one at least once a week.

Thanks

I think the guy that built it is a machinist by trade. He said he machined down each rivet and screw head one at a time. The detail in his plane is exact to its full scale father. I thought it was pretty cool watching Dad point out all the things on it and saying "you see this hear...that's exactly like it was on my champ. And this tail wheel mount...that's just how it is supposed to look!".

Depdog, if your buddy and his Dad come to see it, I'm sure you will see the same reaction. :) Does anybody know if the Champ guy (Dick) posts on RC Groups? I'd love to chat with him about it.

Oh, they have seen it, he has brought it to the house to show them several times. His fathers Champ is the actual plane he based his scale model off of. Same color scheme, and right down to the paint chips, bugs, and the crack in the windshield.

Lots of awesome details in it.
