View Full Version : Do finger-in-the-prop injuries ever heal completely?

It only happened to me once, about a month ago. It basically sliced diagonally into my index finger.. It hurt like hell, but wasn't large enough for stitches. It's not infected and is completely sealed now, but there's still a lump and it hurts a bit when I press on it. Am I going to have to live with this battle scar forever? I know this has happened to lots of folks here. :)
I've taken a few other chunks of skin out due to other aspects of this hobby, but the prop injury is the only one that appears to be lingering the longest.

I'm no doctor, but I do have practical experience  Perhaps your wound should have had stitches -- but there again, you'd probably still have a scar even if you did have them
Sometimes it seems like even the smallest wounds (not just prop wounds) can leave a scar for ever. Maybe it depends on the depth, rather than the length of the wound.

Yup! You are definately scarred for life now , but the up side is the war wound you can show your grandkids!!

Whoa.
Yes, they do heal. Yours isn't healing any further becuase a lump has formed under the skin around some debris, scar tissue, etc. You need to have it removed by a hand surgeon. Takes 15 minutes.
Been there, done that.

That sounds like the culprit. The slice was thick enough that I'm sure it killed a mass of skin cells. If I can ever afford decent health insurance again, I'll go see the doc. As is, it's not really debilitating. I can live with it.

Mine was under the pad of my index finger and took about six months to get so painful I had it out.

Nope! They don't heal completely, you always have to wear a band-aid otherwise they'll ooze blood forever! ;) You can always see a plastic surgeon or dermatologist (best bet there). I'll bet they've got some sort of cast and goop they put on your finger to get rid of the scar. Hey, preliminary reports of some other kind of goop can regrow limbs!

Bless the remote needle valve. I haven't stuck my fingers in the prop, yet.

I have a lot of scars on my fingers. They are all from improper (dumb :o ) use of a knife or other sharp object but none from a prop. I've been hit by a prop on several occasions as I hand start (I have no idea of how to use a chicken stick - is the chicken still alive? - poor chicken  ) most of my engines so the prop would hit me if the engine back fires or I'm too lazy after flipping the prop and it makes a power turn and stops in one of my fingers.
I've also burnt myself on several occasions by accidentally touching the muffler, but again have no scars from that.

Cutting oracover with a straight edge and a new exacto blade....The tip of my index finger isn't quite as long as it used to be......It's still more sensitive than it's mates after about 18 months......this hobby is often hard to explain to the little woman......

Big Shark,
I did the exact same thing. It eventually gets better. I can't remember how long it took... probably 4 years or so. One day I just noticed it didn't feel funny. good news ahead.

Hey guys,
I was messing around with my Jeti 45-3 a while back.. Test running in a CF pod.. I dont know exactly what happend first.. The motor mount giving way and then the impact or my arm hitting the prop and then the motor giving way... Anyway it was late Sunday night and I didnt want to go to the E-room... It eventually healed but I have a large pink scar to show my grandkids!

Jimbo,
You are correct.. My wife almost passed out.. She was going for the phone to call 911 and go wake our son up and the whole bit.. I ended up calling a combat medic buddy of mine to come help me out... Not only was the cut nasty, the bruize went all the way around my arm.. It really should have gotton stiched up but I was really getting some good sympathy from my wife for a few days after that!

Wow, that makes my little finger injury look like nothing. I cut my palm once on a piece of glass and it looked kind of like that. It was deep enough that I could see fat cells.
