electric motor sizing

Can someone tell me what the different sizes of electric motors are? I see 380's,400's,480's,500's,etc. What do these numbers mean or relate to? Is there a chart that I can download on these motors? Thanks,fatboy999

Generally the motor sizes relate to the diameter and length of the motor can.
280/380 size motors have cans that are just under 1" in diameter and 1.25" long.

400/480 motors are about 1.2" diameter and 1.75" long

540/05 motors are about 1.5" diameter and 2" long, they generally have a 1/8 inch shaft.

There are other motor considerations to make besides the size of the motor.
# of turns - the number of turns of wire on each leg of the armature, plus the wire size or gage. Generally, "stock" 540 size motors have 27 turns of 22 AWG wire on three or five arms.

RPM @ Voltage - when comparing motor speed (RPM), it is important to compare them at the same Voltage.

also, there are "385" motors, which look externally identical to a 380, but inside they have 5 poles, not 3, and so are slower turning, and less prone to over heating, better for scale ships, rather than fast electrics

I got this from the Mabuchi Motors (http://www.mabuchi-motor.co.jp/english/product/index.html) web site. Most of the motors we use for R/C propulsion are the RS series.

If u clik on the link "search by designation", you can more easily look at their stock range and then at individual can dimensions. Most motors will be similar, but may vary by can and shaft length.
