I ran accross this small SD card writer/reader designed for microcontroller interface. It does uart or spi interface and costs $59. Looks to be a pretty good deal. It does not come with sd card.

Here are some specs:

• Can open 16 files at the same time using file handles.
• Fast startup and media reconnects.
• Fast file write, up to 70 KBytes/Sec (average of 35 KBytes/Sec.)
• Fast file read, up to 250 KBytes/Sec.
• Programmable serial port bud-rate.
• Supports Secure Digital (SD)
• Compact Flash and Micro Drive run in 16-bit True IDE mode.
• Field upgradeable firmware through UART or SPI communication.
• Field upgradeable firmware through a file on the connected media!
• 1/2 ounce with SD card
• Built in 10-bit analog input.
• 40 to 50 mA, power consumption.
• -40°C to +85°C temperature operating range.
• All I/O pins are 5 volt tolerant.

I was thinking of using it as a flight recorder and some other projects, so I bought one to try out.

That looks pretty nice. I'd really like to find a way to interface a thumb drive to something like a PIC...yet i'm not really sure what I'd do with that much memory. Let us know how it works out.

Hound, that's pretty cool. I always like it when someone else buys the thing first and tests it out for the rest of us. :D

Hahaha, I agree!!!!

www.sparkfun.com also has a couple SD options, but I think I like this better :-)

Thanks for trying it out for us!
