Dear all. Does anyone know where one can buy Hc50 type sockets as used in commercial rx's . I have tried some Harwin 1mm pcb sockets but they are not really deep enough and do not hold the xtal very tightly unless you squeeze the skts slightly.

Try Mouser and look at the Mill-Max PC Receptacles.
Mill-Max 0317-0-15-01-34-27-10-0
-or-
Mill-Max 0316-0-15-01-34-27-10-0
may work for you, just put some plate through holes with the spacing you need. Also look at the press fit ones as they have a shoulder on them that could be used to space it up off the board.
If you need a right angle mount, you could use a pair of 1mm test point sockets like the mill-max 395-13-101-34-340000.
http://www.mill-max.com may give you some more ideas.
Don't tell anyone, but I have also used right angle set-screw connectors to mount crystals this size at a right angle to the PCB. Just for experimental purposes mind you...
Also look at regular HC-50u crystal sockets by Tyco P/Ns 8004-1G1, 8004-1G16, 8004-1G2, 8004-1G3.
