Here is an open source pic based gps autopilot. It uses PIC Basic, and also includes the source code. Great resource.

The RCAP PCB board can be found here: http://www.uavs.net

There's a number of things on the market for purchase.

I like the idea of making my own.

This is pretty neat. I don't like how it uses the rudder and needs the co-pilot.

I think a good GPS telemetry component would use the ailerons and maybe rudder too. Why put 2 pieces of hardware in your plane when you can make 1 that does it?

Is there any open source for a co-pilot/auto-pilot? I'd like to combine the two and make a really nice GPS telemetry unit.

Adriel:
There is a large post link in the UAV forum for tons of autopilot info.

Rhatid:
For a GPS logger, try Dietrich Meyer's Logger:
http://home.arcor.de/d_meissner/.suspend.shtml
(sometimes the site is down b/c of too much monthly traffic)

GPS has its own limitations for single-sensor applications, but it can be done. Usually a host of sensors is needed:
level = tilt sensor & gyro,
heading = GPS or magnetometer,
altitude = GPS &/or pressure transducer,
airspeed = GPS &/or differential pressure transducer,
etc....
Eyeball flying assumes a whole lot of things an autopilot doesn't know how to assume.

It's a fun project though, get good and there are jobs that will pay you for this stuff!
