View Full Version : Question about Exhuast Pipe/Tube on CG Anv. Cub...

Hey guys, I'm new to this whole RC thing, and recently came into owning my grandfather's RC plane stuff.
I currently have a CG Anniversay Edition Cub, with an OS .40 engine. I've test mounted this engine into the cub, and it fits perfect, except for the exhuast tube.
The exhuast tube as pictured below when mounted ends inside of the engine cowl hitting the firewall.
So I pulled open the plans for the kit, and saw that I appear to have the wrong exhuast tube for this kit. The exhuast tube pictured in the plans exits out of the bottom of the cowl.
Basicly, I'm wondering where I can buy an exhuast tube for this engine that will work with this kit. Keep in mind this OS engine I own is almost as old as me, originaly purchased in the early to mid 80s.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You can buy after market silencers for these engines from many places that should fit inside the Cub's cowl. They're sometimes called Pitt's style mufflers (or silencers - depending which language you speak).

For one, it looks as if your engine is mounted on its side, which may change things. However if you are planning on having it upright, you would need to buy a pitts style muffler, which is a muffler which is angled down through the bottom of the cowling.

get a pitts style muffler for a side mounted engine . the exhaust tube is a small piece of silicone heat resistence tubing that fits on the muffler and all it does is to get all the exhaust and oil out side the cowl

So after making this post, I searched around and as you guys mentioned determined that a pitts style muffler *should* fit. What do you guys think about this one in particular... I picked it up off of the ebay:Link (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5967477554&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1)
or for the lazy...

this is a slim line pitts muffler it has been used 2 times on a sf 45 due to the straps this motor will fit just about all .40 .45 size motors money orders only buyer pays 4.00 for shipping check out my other auctions
This should work correct? As far as working, I mean it should bolt up to my engine.... I'm pretty sure it will clear the cowl just fine.
PS... how come the IMG and URL tags work properly sometimes, and don't other times... or is it just me?
EDIT: I hit refresh and they work now... hrmm must just be me.

This particular one wouldn't bolt to the engine - it uses a strap instead. The pipes look too long, but they can be cut to the appropriate length. I would look for a pitts style muffler which has slanted backwards exhaust pipes when mounted to the engine and plane. Something like this one (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LX8680&P=0). Or this one (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LX8679&P=0) if your engine is OS 40FP (looks like it on the pictures you posted).

Sorry I should have been more specific with my previous post, I didn't mean BOLT on, as this engine uses strap on exhuasts.
I'm just hoping that the exhuast I purchased from the ebay the exhuast port/rectangle isn't too large or too small for my engine.

you should get one that is made for your engine it will save you alot of hassle than trying to make one fit

Thats what I was asking help for... but this engine was originaly purchased around 1983.... I can't find a thing about mufflers for this engine. The muffler that came with it is an OS 703 which is a strap-on muffler.

i missed the strap the first time i looked at the motor. if the muffler the one on ebay is for a 40 size motor it should fit your motor but its a hit or miss thing thing with them .. look at your motor and see if there any bolt holes on the head for a muffler

Nope no bolt holes (not bolt thru or bolt on) uses strap ons only... Thats what I figured, that these mufflers are a hit or miss wiether or not it fits.
Thanks for your replies everyone!!
