What functions does the PIC perform in a brushless speed control?
I am thinking that it turns on & off the FETs
(What other functions does it provide?)
Please help...

I am thinking that it turns on & off the FETs Commutating the FETS is a big job with very critical timing. This is not a simple task, especially in a sensorless design. The microcontroller is very busy with this task.
What other functions does it provide?)The microcontroller has to decode the R/C pulse and convert the pulse data to control the motor RPM. It also establishes the arming sequence and perhaps low battery detection.
In some designs the microcontoller also presents a "user interface" so that the ESC can be configured. An example of this is the Castle Creations Phoenix line of ESCs.

Ok,
It interprets the PWM signal from the receiver
It controls the slew rate of the motor (linier/non-linier)
It monitors battery voltage
It cuts the motor at a set voltage
It senses preset info for throttle positions
What else can it do?
I want to have all the bases covered before diving into programming one of these things
Can multiple profiles be stored? (use on different motors)
