New guy seeking the fundamentals

I have wanted to build my own Brushless speed control for some time & I have read a few of the posts in this forum concerning the topic but I lack the basics ESC system architecture so please help if possible.
I know some electronics (Air Force Comm/Nav training)

I have no programming experience with any devices so please be basic as I do not understand allot of the programming stuff.

My crude understanding of the brushless speed control is as follows
FET's are the high power transistors used to drive the motor
The counter EMF is used to tell the FET controller were the motor is in relation to the energized FET or reference FET
The controller would be the brains of the board & this is were I get real fuzzy. as I am not with the understanding of what the controller has to perform other than control the FETs & look at the counter EMF
Does the controller process the PWM signal from the receiver also, or is this the function of another chip/device?
I would think some filtering is done
what does the board system architecture look like?
I looking for high level system architecture so I can build on the subject (a block diagram or something)

After the basics I would like to move on to what is needed to program the microcontroller.

Thank you in advance

Welcome;
There is a brushless kit popular in Europe called the SBL.
email contact: Thomas Radetzki [Thomas.Radetzki@t-online.de]

here is a portion of his response to me recently:

The SBL-Micro is good for 8-10 A with 5-10 cells
The SBL-Mega for 40A with 6-12 cells (with max two powerboards it can be enhanced for up to 70/100A)

I think, because of the currently very strong Euro the kit prices will not make you very happy:
SBL-Micro kit: EUR 37,50
SBL-Mega kit: EUR 59,
SBL-Mega Powerboard kit: EUR 16,-
Postage about EUR 3,- to EUR 4,-

If you'll find a way to get the components cheaper in US, PCB and programmed processor are available as set for EUR 16,- (+ postage).
Gruss
Thomas

Several diy designs for brushless controllers, notably the Speedy BL already mentioned by Rick in the previous post, the 'quax' controller and Takao Shimzu's design:
