I have a laptop that has been WELL used. My daughter got a hold of it and was pushing the screen back and forth and now the screen only works when it is almost closed to about 45 degrees open. Any more and it goes blank. I opened it up thinking that it had some kind of switch to turn the screen on and off. I could find no switch at all except i the case of the computer where the close latch engages. Could the screen be damaged? Seems that if it was it wouldn't work at all. Anoyone have any ideas of anything to check? It is a Compaq 1240 Laptop with 15' LCD screen. Not a big loss, I'm just curious to see what is wrong.

There is a ribbon connector from the screen to the board. Pretty delicate.

I saw the connector, it goes through a fitting. Didn't think about that getting pinched though. Have to check that tomorrow.

I agree. Although I'd say they were very very very extremely delicate. I had to replace the ribbon on my Compaq 1600 (an ancient historic relic) 3 times in 4 years.

It may not be pinched, just has to be fatigued. If you have a multi-tester, you can check for continuity from pin-pin.

I would bet the ribbon was just slightly moved out of place. I had a similar problem with my iBook a while back. Thankfully I was able to have it repaired for free.
