I have a question. Is there a way to add back lighting to an LCD display? Can you do it from the side of the glass? I have a lynx 3d pro form Hitec that has a large lcd screen, but it is not back light, can you side light it say with high intensity blue led? kind of like the old casio watches with the small side light bulb before indiglo came around. I can read schematics and can solder pretty well.

I don't think you can add LED backlighting to an LCD panel unless you can remove the shrouding and carefully unsolder the connections to the PCB

Have a word with a guy called Dennis Che at http://www.411techsystems.com/index.html who specialise in LCD panels and I'm sure he will be able to advise correctly

you can add a backlightby using an Electro-Luminescent sheet behind the LCD, an E-L sheet is a plastic paper like thing which glows when given suitable AC voltage. To use these you might have to add an invertor to generate AC from the battery which is DC.

for experimenting have a look of cheap chinese calculators,
get a one without backlight, remove the LCD and peel off the sticked on the back of the LCD it is a mirror like sticker. the side wich sticks to the LCD glass is reflective, after removing you'll find that the LCD screen is tansparent and if you replace the reflective sticker with a EL strip, you'll have a backlight display.

but i don''t think its a good idea to tinker with your hitech's screen... instead you can add small SMD LEDs to illuminate from side

This is more what i was looking to do but was told it wouldnt be bright enough. I am not doing it to make it easier to see just as an asthetic feature for myself. although backlight would be ideal, i dont want to risk damaging the LCD screen by talking it apart.

If there's room behind the LCD to slip a thin piece of plastic, see this:

Doesn't the method of lighting depend on the type of LCD panel? That is, Transmissive vs. Reflective? The location of the the lighting is suppose to be different on these. For example, backlighting a reflective panel is not expected to work at all.

So, before hacking in a backlighting solution, are you sure you have a transmissive panel?

Mr-Tamiya,
It may be a bit easier to do a "front light" .
A while back I moded my sons Game Boy Advance with this type of light ( before GBA SP ) came out . Google for "GBA afterburner" . If it fits , its relatively cheap .
Its a thin plastic film that you put on top of the LCD and uses LEDs to light the screen.
Cheers and Good Luck

RC-CAMYes its transmissive not reflective, Like I said earlier, its more for a "Cool" look than needed, the display in the radio is quite large and very easy to read, I was just trying to change it, I have had it so long I should just sell it and go buy a 3PK LOL but I like the radio and i am very used to it! if it could have been done for around the $30.00 range and not be to evasive I would do it. Thats why i talked about even sidelighting it like from the edge of the glass with a coloured LED and give it a Hue of colour more than a back lit display, although back lit would be Ideal
