Does anyone have BoT drawings, please. I need them for enlarging a 200% version.

Thanks in advance,

Anders (Hoberga@aol.com)

RC Modeler still sells plans for the BoT. The Dynaflight plans don't have the tip panel ribs on them, either....
I remember a few years back RCM had a picture of a fellow with a 35' span BoT

Are you going to make it electric or pure sailplane. I am currently building my second BOT. I am streching the wings to 14' with spoilers and alerons. And customizing the fuselage to hold a mega S-5 and plug in wings.

I saw the 35 ft. version, which is slightly too large for me. 20 ft. will be enough... I have been contemplating a 25-30 cell e-powered version, but this one might be tow only. Although a glow/gas 30cc engine would probably mean a very small sacrifice in performance, there is something about a pure glider....

I am building it with ailerons, flap and spoilers; Most likely required for glide path control at this size.

Thanks for your comments.

Hi Anders:
Probably like most sailplane flyers, I've wanted to build a BOT since the first time I saw one. It's got to be one of the most beautiful planes in the air.
I'm not quite as ambitious as you though. What you've got in mind would truly be impressive.
Here's the info for the RCM plans:

20 feet....where in the hell do you store something with 20 feet (even if it is 10X2) of wing?

Tim:
My buddy and I built a 16' sailplane back in the early 80's. We built it in 4' panels. Otherwise not only is storage a problem but so is transportation. :p
It flew great except it wasn't strong enough. We hand cut the cores from foam then sheeted it with balsa. Way underbuilt. We built a nice looking fiberglass fuselage that we still have the molds for.
Scared the heck out of us the last time we flew it. It was so high we could barely tell what direction it was going. It was in a monster thermal and would NOT come down. Of course, us being the smart designers we had no spoilers.
When we pumped in a little down elevator the wings would just start to flutter. You could hear them.
We thought for sure we were going to lose it, and that was back when radios cost a small fortune. Finally got it down after many hours. It was retired on the spot. It still hangs in the garage.

I thought of doing a larger version, but construction techniques become an issue. Compared to the 1980's, improvements in composites, and other very high strength to weight ratio materials help enlarging without too much of an hassle. I am still contemplating a 30-35 ft. BoT, with four panels. I have a trailer for my powered giant scale planes and a house, with spare square footage, so transportation, and storage are not issues.

Building a 30 ft. wing is fairly easy, just use CF leading edge (arrow shaft) and Cf/Kevlar composites for spars, TE, etc. or cut foam, and sandwich Cf/Kevlar in between the balsa sheeting, and the foam, both resulting in a material cost of around $200. I have some concerns about the fuse, and I cannot do a mold (don't have the technique or time) so that is limiting.

I also sketched a 30 ft. flying wing El Condor (RCM-94) which will be a lot of fun, and a lot cheaper/simpler.

I'll keep you posted.

Ric , I remember that plane and it was a monster at that time , the thing flew great . I can see two people launching it off Cal State Hill in my fuzzy memory( no test glides just chuck it off the Hill). You sold me one of your Fuselages but I never did get around to building the model, That was one tough layup I could hit baseballs with it. Glade to hear that it survives.

The big Bird of Time sounds like a great project , love that look!

Hi Earl,
Test Glides? We don't need no stinkin test glides.....:D.......that sounds like us all right

You have a better memory than me (which isn't saying much  ). I don't even remember building more than one of those fuselages, let alone selling one.
I always liked that plane but Bill never did.....I think it about scared him to death......:p

I'm sure all you BOT lovers already know about the Skybench bird series, and there's a new 134" span version in the works. Love the shape of that wing!

Sorry, it's a 132" span. www.skybench.com
