Look Neat. Great candidate for full RC conversion.
Any thoughts?

Thats a lot of money to spend just to rip the guts out of her, nice looking planes though (At least the photograph's are)
Looks like you'll have to wait a while for the stock to arrive though...

90 + % of the time I can catch it; but when i can't the nacells do pop off
Can't wait to try 4 300s on that 747!

Once Estes releases the kit just go to the parts section and order just the airframe parts. Alot less money.

Looks great! What size wheels are you using? Can you show a picture of your wheel installation? Do you think retract is feasible?
I have bruff convert one for me (two servos aileron and one servo elevator) and I can loop it using stock 8 cell NiMH. I am really impressed. The tiny 650mAh AAA size NiMH can put out almost 13 Amp at full throttle with stock four EDFs (I guess the stock motors are 280 size). Flys really fast. Beats many of my EDF fighter jets and handles wind well. The four nacelles doubles as excellent landing skids on grass.

I converted the old xb-29 airlifter. These seem to have a decent airfoil. I was never able to get mine to drop a wing, and they glide forever. I flew mine on edf-55 150's with a 2s 1320 tp pack. Long flights and would ROG easily.

The pictures you posted are of the HobbyFlite 747. Pusher prop nacelle at the tail, clear plastic rudder and elevator, etc....
It was licensed by Boeing, but the owner of HobbyFlite stopped making them, possibly because the license renewal fee after the original term of the license ran out, may have been too high....
I think the owner went back to making movies (special effects??).
They occasionally show up on ebay.
That's where I got mine.
And no, I'm not selling it.
But I am looking for the original landing gear from HobbyFlite and the Speed 300 nacelles... They're sitting in someone's stash somewhere. :D

Hello, everybody.
I have one like Termit's plane shown in the pictures above. It's a 2-channel version and I plan to convert it to full RC (Have bought the 4-ch radio, 2 micro servos, ESC and receiver alraedy). How do You connect the speed control to manage the twin EDF's simultaneously Is there any significant jeopardy to the performance if I just cut and re-attch the wires instaead of using a "Y" connector ?
By the way, my plane is a Made in China by Fei Ma Toys. Do anyone of You know about its technical specs ? There's no trace of then and I need the data such as thrust, power consumption (Amperes), etc to use these EDF's in my Boeing 737-300 (under construction).
Tks!

My wife got me one of the Estes 747's last year, I finally got around to converting it. 5 channel conversion, A-E-T-NWS-RET, using a total of 6 servo's and a 30 amp ESC and a 6 channel GWS receiver. Power is stock fans and motors running on a single , 3S, 20C, 1800 mah Hyperion. I made the ailerons and elevators pretty close to scale outlines so I was a little unsure how the handling may turn out but she flies fine.
Landing gear mains and nose are discontinued Wattage units. 4-wheel main and double nose bogies are homemade from aluminum. The retracts operate from separate GWS Naro+BB servo's (1 main, 1 nose) and NWS is a GWS pico servo. Ailerons and elevator are HS-55's.
Original test flight ended in disaster as the voltage regulator in the ESC shut down after about a minute at about 150 feet and she spiraled in from there. I fitted a separate BEC for the re-maiden today and flew her 3 times without any incidents. Overall, I'm happy with the results, she looks pretty cool zoomin' by...

Cool, do you have close up picture how you made the scale 4 wheel mains?
Also the stock battery is 8cell NiMH and a 2 cell LiPo is more close match to stock battery. I wonder how long the stock motors would last on 3 cell but I get you would have much more power than stock.

shschon,
I tested the plane on the bench with a 2 cell but the performance was only marginally better than stock set up. I ran a stock fan on a 3 cell set up for at least 5 minutes while monitoring end bell temperature and recorded 136 F as maximum which I felt was ok. I'm curious to see how many flights the stock motors will give before concking out. In any case, once airborne, I'm flying mostly 1/2 to 3/4 throttle which should help.
Here's some pic's of the main bogies.

I am flying mine using 2 cell 2100mAh 20C LiPo and yes the performance is very close to that of stock 8 cell NiMH and under load voltage 7.2V, under load Amp 11~13 Amp (from all 4 motors).
What is the voltage and Amp draw at 3 cell?
LK2TINKR
Jun 20, 2006, 06:45 AM
The stock set up weighs 24.25 oz. ready to take off. The power is 13 amps at 7.3 volts, rapidly dropping to ~ 11.5 to 12 amps at 7.0 volts. This is roughly 100 watts of power and about 7 oz. of thrust. This gives around 65 watts per pound and a 0.24 thrust to weight ratio which is consistant with the stock performance.
My 3 cell set up gives the following:
Power: 24 amps at 10.8 volts = 250 watts
Thrust: 14 oz.
Weight: 30 oz, ready to take off
P/W ratio: 133 watts per pound
T/W ratio: 14/30 = 0.47
Even at half throttle, the power is 18 amps which is 50% more than stock so the difference is very dramatic. The longevity of the motors is not guaranteed!

WOW! Double thrust! That must be fun. If the stock motor burns out do you have in mind some brushless motor upgrade? Do you think the stock motor is 100 size motor?
LK2TINKR
Jun 20, 2006, 09:21 PM
The stock motors are a long can 180 type, very similar to the motor that Wattage uses in their small park flyers. It has a an all metal can and end bell with carbon brushes so it should be able to handle 6 amps, at least for a while anyway. I ran one of those in a Cox phantom look-alike on 3 cells for a long time without failure before upgrading it to a GWS EDF-50 with a Feigao 12 mm diameter 5300 kv motor. I still enjoy flying it. I think that same motor should be a good upgrade replacement for the 747 except the stock fan doesn't seem too easy to dis-assemble without total destruction. I guess we'll figure it out when we get there...

If you look closely, you'll see a joint line running the circumference. by splitting the foam there, you should have no problems getting to the motor. Also if you look close, the fan gets threaded on the front.

Thanks for the tip. I had gotten past the nacelle but the fan had me stumped. I'll look at it again to see how to hold the motor shaft so the fan can be spun off.

That is one thing that I wish was a stock feature. The throttle is either off or on, there is no proportional throttle. :( I have a 1500 mah lipo that was planning on using, as soon as I throttled up I figured the stock fans/motors wouldn't last long. Those little fans literally scream. Any idea how many amps all 4 stock engines pull?

not sure what your saying i use my own speed controller and recierver so i have controll over the throttel about 5 amp if i rember right per motor.. and around 50+ watts per motor on the 2100 11.1v lipo and yes if you use full power on the motors with out reducing power you will blow the little motor  ,,,,,,,,,,,so add a speed controller and reciever and manage your power and it will be fine.. full throttle for around 15-20 sec power down to 3/4 power and and then down to 1/3 power then power up to full power for around 10-15 sec and then power down to 3/4 to 1/2 power.. and fly that bird.

The 1500 lipo will need to be at least 15C (15 x 1.5 = 22.5 amps) to handle the load, as I mentioned earlier the 3 cell set up pulls up to 24 amps at WOT. I'm using a 20C rated 1800 mah lipo (Hyperion) with good results. A friend of mine just built one using throttle, rudder and elevator and flying a 2 cell, 2100 TP pack. I checked it out on my power meter, it's pulling 13 amps, dropping to 11.5 quickly. Flys ok but it's pretty anemic and has to be flown mostly full throttle.

The AWACS is the same plane just with added dome and a camera.
You don't need a calm day. I have flown these two extensively they actually fly better with some wind. I think they were designed primarily as a glider as the stock power is weak (at least with stock NiMH battery). These penetrate wind well and they are made of super tough EPP you can crash all you like and fly again in no time.
